Service C56 – Add quick release to rear fuel tank mount...

I was snapping my driver backrest onto my Tiger the other day and had an idea which led to what you will see next.

On my RZ500 with the aftermarket tailpiece, getting the rear tank mount clevis pin out can be a bit of a challenge. The long pin hits the tailpiece side extensions before it is fully out. Plus getting at the spring pin that retains it is not always the easiest either. Plus it could be dropped down into the bowels of the motorcycle, never to to found again. Okay, now that I have the work I put into this project fully justified (LOL), let’s see what we I came up with.

Here is the quick release mechanism for my driver’s backrest on my Triumph Tiger and FJR1300 that I created about 10 years ago.. It is the rear connection located at the base of the top case and there is a matching front connection that pops up between the driver and passenger seat sections.

The raw hinge looked like this.

Because I don’t like chopping up parts of the bike while it is in operating condition, I found a reasonably priced rear tank mount to experiment with on ebay for US$38.

Picture 462
Image

I’m always on the lookout for interesting hardware at the local surplus store and I picked up this aluminum quick-release hinge several years back for a $1.50. It turns out that it is a perfect match width-wise and for pin diameter as the rear tank mount.

Hartwell makes aircraft parts among other things and I believe it to be a quality piece.

Picture 465

This little hinge has some nice features designed in it, including a way to press the knurled handles out.

Picture 466
Image

So my mission was to add the same “L” slots of the hinge leaf into the steel RZ500 tank bracket. Time to go to work with the rotary tool (Dremel tool as we generically call it is the States).

Here are the results before painting. Sorry, the picture looked in focus on my little phone screen. I rotated the cutout pattern around the pin axis a bit to suit the application.

Picture 468

Here it is after a quick shot of silver frame paint. Notice I improved on the design slightly by adding “hooks” to the retracted slots so they can't inadvertently pop back out with a little bump (I could see myself bumping them easily while installing the tank).

Picture 469
Image

Here it is with the “guts” re-installed. One shows the tank mount pins extended out while the other shows them retracted.

Picture 471

Here is a comparison of the one I took off the bike and the new quick release version. I was a little bit surprised of two things. First, the original mount was about .25 inch taller. It did not stop the installation, but it did make the tank fit a bit more snugly. Second, the original bracket had a stop built in it to keep the tank from arcing back too far. I didn’t even know the stop was there because someone had installed it to the front (perhaps to keep the new paint from getting damaged???). Again, this wasn’t a show-stopper and my custom seat seems to do a good job of stopping the tank.

Here are the final installed views. The first one shows the tank pinned in place. The second, with the pins retracted and ready for the tank to be removed.

Service E55 – Paint turn signal housings black...

Forum member Smoker convinced me the fake carbon paint on the turn signals had to go and I added it to the work list. And you know, once its on my work list, it is GOING to get done!

Here is what I started with. The carbon fiber look on the post mounted signals was exceptionally bad with its stretched out pattern.

Picture 475
Image

A quick masking job.

Picture 476
Image

And then a spray with the black plastic paint.

Picture 477
Image

And here they are, mounted on the bike.

Picture 478
Image

Picture 479
Image

One thing I noticed while having the front signals removed was that they can be rotated level with the ground while still covering the original mount holes. This means I don’t have to wait to do the job until the holes are filled and a full bike repaint is done.

The funny thing about this project is, there is probably a guy out there with the same set of turn signals in solid black saying “I wish I had those trick carbon fiber turn signals on my bike”. Too late for a swap now!!!

E55 Total Cost: US$0.00 (paint from inventory)

So the used fuel tank bracket isn't actually an RZ500 part? :smt017

Nice work.
Thanks.

I've been a bit baffled over the whole tank bracket thing. The part number in the ebay listing matches the RZ500 parts list and also looks like what they show in the matching diagram. What I haven't been able to find is a diagram from a different version of RD/RZ that shows a bracket with a stop welded on it. Perhaps the original one on my bike with a stop wasn't OEM, at least for an RZ500. I'm just glad the new modified one fits... I made a big assumption without a test fit, but luckily it worked out in my favor this time.

(Edit: Mine is a 52X spec bike, btw)

Bought this one recently for my project bike.

I thought there's only one part number, but not positive.

Not sure what's on my complete (Canadian) RZ500.

thanks for posting. Yours definitely looks like the one I took off.

Looking at the old docs (maybe I saw it in the owner's manual), the bikes were supplied with a cable (or rope?) that would attach at the back of the bike and perhaps hold the tank against that stop during maintenance procedures. It seems like it would mess up the tank paint the first time you use it though.

The 47X spec and 1GE spec bikes had different rear fuel tank brackets

Thanks for the clarification jackson.40. It appears then, that the ebay seller had the part number wrong in his auction. The part it shows and I received is a 47X-24192-00, not a 1GE-24192-00. I checked the parts list for 47X and 1GE and they show the difference too. 52X also calls for 1GE-24192-00. None of the diagrams show the additional stop on the 1GE though, but I'm not surprised Yamaha failed to update the picture for such a minor change.

So the mystery is solved (hey, that didn't take long with the power of this forum). I have a spare 1GE-24192-00 mount and matching pin to sell someday!

Thanks again for your time to help out this newbie.

Sweet looking project bikes, btw.

I had to check mine to make sure both were different. Another 47X oddity added to the list.

Thanks for checking.

Agreed on the oddity. I can see making an improvement by adding the stop, but the 1/4 inch (6mm) height increase on the later models is odd to me.

Do the tanks fit looser on the 1GE? With the 1GE mount in place, the rubbers under the tank didn't seem to be compressed much, if at all. Now with the shorter 47X mount in place, it is a very tight fit because rubbers are compressed. I can grab the tank and wiggle the whole bike without movement of the tank on the frame. Its like the tank is now one with the bike. No so before, the rear of the tank could move some.
