Hi,

I don't know if it's true but I'm told that ceramic coating on the pipes is very good at controlling heat insulation.
I checked with Camcoat in the UK and naturally they confirmed this - it would be interesting to hear if anyone on this forum agrees. - Since ceramic coating is also good at corrosion protection it might be a good solution - although I'm sure it would be more expensive than exhaust wrap. I suppose exhaust wrap is good at portraying a racing image as well in a way that ceramic coating doesn't ?

Cheers
Paul

Ceramic coating on car headers definitely reduces heat. The headers on my Mustang are ceramic coated. They look good and it seems to work.

One thing to remember is... if you don't let the heat escape, it will stay in the pipe and this can change the performance of the pipe.

Thanks for that - I've got JL stainless pipes - I wanted to keep the look of them - I'll enquire if they do a clear ceramic coat - otherwise I suppose I would have to think about a black coat which I know they defintely do.

The pipes on my Mustang are silver in colour.
I have a feeling that another Aussie on this site may have done it to his pipes, but can't remember who it was.

Here you go:

I think the silver is the colour it comes out as... any other colour is applied afterward.

I believe it is "aaronmvrider" who had his pipes done. A photo of them is his avatar!

Andrew - Glad to hear you approve of the thread. Be sure to take bolly's advice on ways to get more light in there or enter from different points. You will find all kinds of uses for the scope. Plus it's just kind of fun.

rd84/hybrid/smokey - I've always liked the look of the silver ceramic coating. Someday I would really love to get my Tommy Crawford chambers updated with it and getting rid of the heat wrap would be a huge bonus. Of course, I would want to pop the dents out before doing so :smt002 .

That brings up a question... I've always known ceramic material to be brittle. Does the coating chip off if the chamber is flexed or dented?

The coating seems to be pretty sturdy on my headers, but they haven't been dented or flexed!

Any old South African Petrol Heads will know the name Cowley Exhausts, well these had a type of ceramic/enameled finish, I don't know if we're talking of the same process here, but yes, 'big' stones did chip it, and if you crashed, you'd throw the pipe away. Once it was damaged, it was very difficult to re-do.

Guys.. feel free to correct me if my memory is as holey as my jeans!

WOW! It has been over a year since I replied in this thread. Sorry guys, I've been a little busy getting my other shop finished up and RZ has been somewhat ignored lately. The bike stares at me every day begging for attention and the guilt has finally gotten to me.

Here are a few shots from the recent progress on the dream garage just so you guys don't think I was taking it easy all these months. I installed a 4-post auto lift, a cabinet with 60 gallon compressor inside, and a light control panel (among many, many other things).

Getting back to the garage where the RZ currently resides...
My wife just sold her Victory Vegas and there is just a little more elbow room in the other city garage these days (at least until she pulls her HD Street Bob out of storage, anyways). While I have the extra room, I'm going to squeeze as much resto work in as possible on the RZ.

I laid the bikes out a little differently in the garage so the RZ is closer to the workbenches. I can also roll that BMW straight back to get extra room on the right side of the bike. I bought some cheap work stands to make a few jobs a bit easier too.

I also bought an ultrasonic cleaner to help with the delicate bits

So let's see, just where did I leave off anyway? Oh yes, I just installed the throttle cable.

Just catching up on some old and new replies here...

2smoke - Updates are coming. I have a couple items already complete and will be inserting here soon. And more parts are on the way to start others.

Andrew - Thanks for the info on the ceramic coating.

kpke - Glad to BE back. It's kind of strange that I stepped away from this bike for so long because I really enjoy working it. I'm happy to hear you find these posts of some use. It's also nice to hear there's another garage junkie from the Garage Journal on here. That forum has grown incredibly since I joined in 2006.

Thanks for stopping by and also thanks for posting all the details on your 500 project - lots to learn there, for sure. I need to go back to the beginning to read it closely for tips. I'm especially curious to see what you find out about your fuel line flow as I have a similar (albeit, low budget version) setup.
