Real shake down ride, video, and bumped to level 2!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by pstamper » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:21 pm

Finally let RZ stretch its legs. Has R6 swingarm and triple tree ala Steve. Rick Lance did engine few years ago. Bought bike from Rick while at Barber. A little carb tuning and pipes runs as well as I need. Elephant ears with a filter I put in stock local. Need stiffer rear spring due to longer R6 swinger. I am 160 and need a 1,000lb spring. Have 43mm free sag. Think it has a 900. Forks have all the upgrades. Pilot Pures and HH pads. Tire wear looks great as well as plugs. Please watch video and any one chime in. It was worth the effort and hope aluminum frame does not screw it up. Excited to get knee down all the way around numerous right corners, working on lefts. Here is link for You Tube.

Nice.

What was the gear/revs/speed on the banking? Couldn't decide if you where coming out of the chicane in 2nd or 1st?

Where you top of 4th or 5th on the banking?

I hope to make the next outing - just putting a few final touches on the bike as it stands.

Think it was second in the chicane and would just get in 6th at end of straight. Depended on traffic and the drive out on to the straight. Could put knee down thru 4 and all the way around 10 if the speed was right. They said Level 2 would be much safer due to the traffic I was getting into. That Kawasaki 1000 Concours got me on that last lap. I was beat and went in. Still sore today. Legs are the worst and popped my neck on the straight during one session. Looked up and caught air on helmet at speed, that hurt. Thought I was going to come in after that. Now I know what I need to physically work on. Still fun and a little nervous about 2nd level and the passing speeds that are going to happen to me now. New rear spring hopefully before next session. Ride Smart is doing a two day event next month I think.

Is this bike 15/42?

Is it revving out to 10,500?

16/44 and I think 9,500 or so. Most of the time I kept it right where it would start to pull strong. Say 6,000 up to 9,000. My throttle position and opening had become smoother. Truthfully I looked at the tach very seldom. Where ever it was happy is where I kept it. It should pull 10500 but it did better at lower revs.

What I noticed when my bike was richer it would not pull passed 9,500 at all. Simply ran into a wall.

When the foam filters came off and the oxygenated fuel went in it screamed to 10,500 and felt like a totally different machine.

180/55/17 rear right?

So it was about 112mph at 9500rpm in 5th or 120mph at 9500rpm in 6th then. Did you say your other bike ran out of gear on the straight?

Glad you appreciated that. Today is the first time my legs are feeling better. Neck still a little tight. I felt my age after that. You know they are building an F1 track in Austin. I heard that Schwantz was moving his race school there. I am in whatever the cost as long as I hold up. Track days will also be on the schedule but who knows when. This is a video from the other scooter at Barber. Did not know if you saw. My down shifting improved greatly at TWS this last time since Barber. I over revved way to much on down shifting but the bike also had issues coming out of several of the left corners. Could not stay up with other bikes till it cleared out.

Thanks for compliment, but it is all your engine that did it. The down shifting was much better at TWSI thought. Your opinion please. I love ya man but 3 engines, not for a while. These two have been great. Will order brakes soon. Will see how it does in Level 2 with some experienced riders. I am not the youth I use to be.

By the way, plugs look good too? Maybe a little rich?

Track day Sunday. Will post update. New spring on shock, adjusted settings, and new EBC Contour rotors. First few sessions will be interesting, but hoping the bike will be more planted on front end. Stiffer spring has also changed ride height more. Hope it is stays stable but should be easier to change direction.

Hi,

Nice to see a RD500 handling so well ! - It also looks good with the R6 swingarm, forks and JM's !

On my standard RD500 the plugs are always a very clean light grey in appearance with just a bit of tan colour with standard everything - so yours might be a bit rich ?
My standard 47X will rev to 10,500 RPM although I try and avoid this since the power is tailing off. I've been told 47X CDI's don't allow these RPM's but the bike does it anyway. I'd imagine with your lower gearing you would be getting incredible acceleration ?

I'm also doing a project RZV500R - I'm going to fit it with a 2C0 R6 swingarm like yours. Could you tell me what engine sprocket I should use please - ie does it come off of an R1 or something like that ? - or do I have to get a custom one made ? - Do you think your gearing would be Ok for road use ?

You must have really enjoyed your track sessions - I'm very envious !

Many thanks

Regards
Paul

Front spocket was a cbr1000RR and settled on a 16 front and 44 rear to get clearance on swing arm. Part #196033 at Motorcycle Superstore. Could still use a little more. Had front machined down to same thickness as original. Took the material off the thicker side of sprocket and all line up well. Pulls well. Steve in Florida did all the mods. You will most likely need heavier spring for rear shock due to longer swingarm.
