To Chrome or Not to Chrome?

#1 Post by rzmad » Mon Apr 02, 2012 3:08 am

Having had alloy parts satin polished over a year ago I've found that alloys corrodes and show white spots to which you have to keep applying a satin pad to re polish the bits. The silencers were quite bad, probably the worst so I mirror polished one up to compare. It looks quite nice shiny so I'm thinking of getting the top exhaust outlets chromed after seeing someone on here who's already done this - looks really nice.

Question - is it a good idea? Any special prep work for the chromer needed as the outlets are part of the exhaust baffle which are sooted up?

Does anyone have a photo showing the upper std exhausts tips chromed by any chance? I can't find that photo I previously saw on here?

Thanks, Yes that's the baffles but their not chrome. What I saw was the baffle/exhaust chromed fitted to the bike. Think it was either on a RZV500R or white/red RD500

Cheers,
Paul.
No, I saw that one when I was looking for that photo - which showed a pic of the rear end with std pipes with the top ones chromed. I even commented on it asking how did he polish them, he replied they've been chromed. But I just can't find the posts, it's a while ago, anything up to a year I reckon.

seems the local chromer won't touch my baffles unless they are spotless clean. They won't clean then either!!!!!

Caustic Soda me thinks!

Nitromors paint stripper works very well on carbon too, or at least the old stuff did. Try caustic first, de grease, and then the dishwasher, sould be spotless by then.

Saw on another forum it might be worth asking when the need to change solutions if they are a small company, as they could do them before they change for a new batch of 'stuff' ??
