I have Mach 3 as the control software interfacing with a Gecko controller.

I have BobCAD/CAM for processing my advanced drawings into usable g-code.

I had a budget in mind, as well as an amount of space I could set aside.

The next step up would have quadrupled my cost and required a lot more space. I can live with $3500 - while $13,000+ is a lot harder to fit into a hobby budget :)

Agreed on the budget thing. Have you previously used Mach 3? And are you finding it easy to work with?

Really - $3500, for the whole package? This is even within my own limited budget. Like the others - I'm very curious to hear how this machinery is to work with. I guess both of the beastie boys can benefit from this purchase :-)

I am not a machinist by trade or hobby... I am however a professional computer/server/software/system/network guru.

The machinist essentials I am picking up from a master fabricator by way of QA... and this is an education in and of itself.

The CAM/CNC stuff is complicated as all fucken' hell  - and there is a steep learning curve (for me at least) and since we are talking about a 1/4hp milling machine that is now being directed by 4 (I have a 4th axis I have not installed yet) powerful DC stepper motors and will willingly destroy itself and anything in its path there is no room for any error.

The 3D drawing production is simple for me. I have been a CAD hobbyist for years. Converting easily created 3D drawings into meaningful tool paths is another thing entirely.

But if I am able to assess, conceptualize, sell, design, deploy, manage and remotely maintain 100+ user 100% uptime networks from Workstation to VirtualServer farm, email, apps, SAN storage etc. etc. etc. for a living then I think I should be able to manage this task.

At least I hope I can

hey rc ,i am in houston (west side ) and have been a cnc lathe/mill hand since i left school 30 something years ago.
any questions on speeds n feeds etc or any other questions give me a shout.
$3500 is a great budget price to get started with.
cheers mark

Thanks Mark.

I totally had not even starting trying to understand feed speeds, ramp, plunge, conventional vs. climb etc. yet.

And then the entire 'relative' to the origin motion - moving the piece vs. the tool.

Then the pockets vs. islands and facing and rough paths, finish paths required to turn a drawing into code that will result in the art one needs.

I have always been in awe of the way you wizards of the black art of machining operate. It is a lot more complex than people realize :)

its not that complicated , the m/c will only do what you tell it to ,
and you just go line by line until you get comfy with it.
but no worries we all started at the same spot .
the cad/cam software now helps a great deal and you are familiar with that so your halfway there already.
good luck

Well, after some testing, setting up, adjusting and guessing....

I think I my be ready to try my hand at creating some real parts.

Looks good, now quit yappin about it, and make some parts that we can all admire!

Still a few more details to finish up - the tool mist lubrication system for one - I just finished a simple remote control panel (I guess pendant is the proper name) in thee mean time.

I've been running a CNC machining center since 95. It really isn't that complicated when you are only moving one or 2 axis at a time. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to simultaneous moves in YZ and the 4th axis'. Feel free to send me a PM if you ever have a question.

Re: RC45's Project-OW69 YZR OW54/TZ500 - AirTech 4 the Win!

Contrary to what certain people believe, AirTech fairings are well made and awesome value.

Take 1 AirTech OW70 tail piece...

Take 1 AirTech TZ500 tail piece...

Do some cutting, fitting & glassing...

And end up with the retro goods I have been looking to achieve.
The real challenge is working around the RZ500 upper pipe layout versus the TZ500 and OW48R/53/54 pipes. The RZ pipes are very broad in the hip compared to the period race bikes.
1 step closer.

Getting there slowly but surely.

Old-school new-school combo :)

The modernized OW54 look. Off to the painters next.

*edit*

Looks like Imageshack has screwed up yet again, nearly every thumb nailed image is now showing up at full 2000x4000 resolution which makes viewing this thread bloody neigh impossible.

I may fix every image in the thread o just toss them - I am undecided at this time. :(
