RC45's Project-OW48R/53P/TZ500J - 1985 Works Brembos!
Moderator: rztom
Well, I am headed so far down this retro path now, I am not sure where I will end up.
This is the new workarea inspiration - the historical "accuracy" of the build is along the lines of an OW60 square 4 chassis resurrected in 1985 by a privateer with a V4 and OW76 bodywork (which also served as OW81 bodywork) - the storied OW60 frame is to explain away the absence of the Deltabox style frame
I would like to do another RZ-based build in the future - maybe Sheenes OW53. I think that the RZ chassis has a lot of potential as a basis for making perimeter framed YZR and TZ replicas.

Slow progress in the OW60/OW76 retro replica build.
If I am not careful I might be getting another frame just to do a replica of the 1982 TZ500J
Anyway, back to the current build progress.
OW76/81A tail piece arrived. OW76/81A/B/86 fairing should be here in about 3 weeks or so.
Working out dash layout at the moment.

Now to determine which tank will be best suited to which replica. Interestingly enough, the 3 tanks have very unique knee indents, and the OW53/TZ500, OW60 and OW76 seem to have similarly unique knee indents.
The RZ500's seems to be closest to the TZ500 and OW53 (and it has an external gas cap), the NC30 is pretty close to the OW60 and the FZRSP is pretty close to the OW76 - and both have flush gas caps. The FZRSP tank has some lines and creases on top that are absent on all the race bike tanks. But otherwise mathces the later bikes quite well.

I think the NC30 tank is the closest. I have on for my 3MA YZR rep build. In terms of side to side wideness, and tank breather, it is the closest to the YZR500 tank. The front of it is also somewhat flat like the YZR tank. The only thing is it is soo wide that the frame has to be plated in on the 3MA. The RZ frame is a little closer as it does not have indents in the frame. I would go with the NC30 tank as it looks badass with the tank vent. O, and I have like 5 tank breather's if you want to buy another if something happens. I say go with the NC30 tank.
Yes, the NC30 tank does have that late 80's 90's GP look about it, I was looking for a more late 70's early 80's look, but the NC30 looks the part.
I will take you up on that offer for a tank breather. I have a second NC30 tank that does not have a breather.
I have a TZR250 1KT tank inbound as well - it seems to be shallow and flat enough to really be able to serve as my early 80's tank for the TZ500J look.
The YZR750 swingarm arrived.
It is 2.5lb lighter than the TZR250 3XV swinger I almost used - 2.5lb might not seem like much, but those extra pounds here and there end up adding up.

where do you find OW 76 seat ?
The gentleman sells the seat unit via Yahoo Auctions Japan. Search for RZV500R OW76. He puts the auction up every few weeks.

Welp!!!
The Zeeltronics tach adapter definately smoothed out the signal, but it sadly didnt halve it.
With the RZ500 tach it idles ar 1100rpm or so - indicated 2200 on the ZX7 unit.
I so wanted to use the "10,000rpm straight up" white on black ZX7 tach. Hopefully I can either sort this one out of get one that I can get to work.
The old school Scitsu analog temp guage can't wait - it's just measuring air temps

I did not see any obvious way to adjust the Zeel tach adapter.
There are no dip switches I can see. It is a closed unit with 4 wires coming out.
Perhaps when combined with the full Zeeltronics ignition system it is adjustable.
I have sent Borut an email to ask for ideas, and in the mean time found another cheap used 4 stroke tach that looks the part.
A late 80's FZR1000 unit. Worth a try for $25 I guess. And I think I like the long sweep.
And if that fails the TZ125 unit on the way from Japan will hopefully be the ticket.
I just think a tach that has a similar bezel, numbers, colour and retro feel to the temp guage is key. The ZX7 numbers are the closest to the temp guage.

Thanks, looks like it might be worth a try.RuZty wrote:http://www.bakerelectronix.com/products_tsd/RC45 wrote: The Zeeltronics tach adapter definately smoothed out the signal, but it sadly didnt halve it.
Although the Scitsu tach definately would work and has that retro classic look it also has that unique Scitsu disk on the face, I was going to leave that to be the last resort.Dubsey wrote:You could always get the tacho from scitsu
they are not that expensive and there is an option to run from the bikes battery
