How close is the rear wheel to fitting and being centered in the swingarm.
Even though the wheel is a 6" wheel and the race style 18/67-17 Michelin is mounted, the assembly easily sits in the center of the swingarm with good clearance all round. I will not attempt to mount a 190 section rear tyre - no point really, the street style 180-55/17 should be ok, although I am sure the 6" rim will push the side walls out slightly reducing rolling diameter ever so slightly.

Steve - the mission, should you accept it, is to come up with a way to get a rear brake rotor correctly offset for the caliper and a sprocket correctly sized and aligned.

The rotor mounting holes are 125mm center to center in a square layout. Sprocket bolts appear to be 98mm center to center vs the 100mm that is on the Suzuki wheel.

This post will not self-destruct after you read it ..

**EDIT**

Mystery solved - the wheels are for 92 to 94 CBR900RR.

Here is a photo of the only other set I can find - a bike featured in 2002 Sport Rider. I managed to get hold of the owner of the VTR, he confirmed these to be Marchesini, Honda CBR application.

Ok - after scouring the interwebs for a couple weeks it seems the wheels I have are TecnoMagnesio Superlights. Marchesini sold them under their name after the buyout.

This is the closest I have come to actually seeing what the sprocket carrier shoudl look like.

ImageImage

Being this is a track only bike that will see about 50 hours of track time per year, shoudl I even be concerned about running with a non-cushdrive setup?

I give up. I am going to use these 5 spoke wheels on the TZR250.

I managed to locate a 3 spoke Marvic that matches the front wheel.

Image

Not ideal, as I really wanted the 5 spokes on the 500. But I do not want the riding of the bike held up by technical wheel details. I will leave sorting out the 5 spokes for the 250 project.

Which reminds me, anyone got the recipe for a 400cc+ big bore reverse cylinder RZ350 motor to go in the TZR250 3MA chassis?

Marvic arrived. 12lbs light.

Marvic, sprocket, rotor & PowerOne weighed in at 28lbs.

5lbs lighter than the current rear wheel setup.

Slowly but surely the weight comes down

Actual all up weight on the new Marvic is 27.3lb for a 6.5lb drop. Current rear wheel is 33.8lb.

Turns out the wheel is Kawasaki fitment, not Yamaha fitment - finally found a scrapyard sprocket and brake rotor to fit to confirm.

Now to order a nice light weight rear rotor and drop another pound.

The hub width is too much for the NC29 swingarm, so a YZF750R is on the way with rear brake caliper and holder. Hopefully I am not giving away any weight on the swingarm swap. Perhaps the NC29 swinger is heavier than the YZF unit and I get a couple free lbs.

You are a persistent guy. Did you use Union Cycle Salv? Are all the parts bolting on or is there machining work involved? You have a good machinist local? NAPA auto did my front sprocket and was spot on. need to order another set of sprockets, running high revs cruising on the highway. Rick said he is getting bolt made which will be nice. He said a few weeks so I am figuring a month.  The guy in London sounds like a scam. Contacted a member that might be close to him and find out if he is fact or fiction. Do not approve of dishonest people. He said he had a PV controller for $200. Mine will work if twisted, so time for replacement. Which version are you running? Hope you had a good New Year and best wishes for New Year and the project. Hopefully see you soon.

Yep - I am so persistant I am now about a grand and a half into this "quick easy" wheel upgrade what with extra wheels and other odds and ends purchased. So much for "hey, I see a cheap set of wheels for sale"!!

I need to get focused and get rid of a bunch of excess parts again to build the motor fund back up again. The wheel has sadly turned into a bit of an obsession!

I ended up getting the test fit items at Sam's Motorcycles. A Kawasaki 636 sprocket bolted right up, as did a ZX7 brake rotor. The wheel is a 25mm axle like the YZF750 swingarm (I am told) - so the swingarm, brake caliper carrier and wheel will all "fit" - the big and as yet unanswered question is will Steve be able to get it all to fit the RZ500 without an outrageous offset needed on the countershaft sprocket.

I have signed up for the 3/3 MSRH Driev Smart day. I don't think I will be ready for the 1st TWS day.

I am using stock electrics - 1GE CDI and PV controller.

Will it offset in or out? Can you machine the hub. Seem like Sams' was pretty helpful. I have 3 options, Resoldered connections, get a used stock one, or bite the bullet and get the Zeeltronic one. Being computer illiterate, ? On how easy programming is. From what I have read seem straight forward. By the way, I asked the guy in London which PV controller he had and answer was, I have 2, one is sun only and the other is sun and wind combined. No wonder I can not fix my bike, not enough solar power.

It will need to be offest outwards about 5mm or so it seems.

No chance of machining the hub as it has the threaded holes cast in with bare minimum depth on the brake side and the cush drive rubber receptacles are cast in on the chain side.

The captive spacer does however protrude about 3/4 inch so that will be able to be trimmed down.

Try find a used PV controller off Yahoo Auctions Japan

I have somewhat fallen for the perimeter framed square fours. Seems that I am moving furtehr and further away from the late model YZR's as each month passes hehe - I guess I could refer to my build as a "privateer OW60V - 82 style GP chassis with an 85 stock based motor". Ah, the stuff of middle-aged dreams.

Here is my inspiration, with similar weight and power and ultra modern rubber, I wonder if I could enjpy similar performance to my childhood heros?

I am just not sure which of the speedblock schemes to go with.

The blue/blue/white/gold wheels early Sarron bikes look good.

Perhaps a bit of a hybrid.

Red, Blue, Blue & Gold vs Blue, Blue, Blue & Gold
