Well, the Baker Electronix unit and the Zeel RevD2 should also be able to half the pulse.

But this 3YL tach and a ZX7 tach both show 4000rpm+ at idle. Maybe there are ghosts in the machine. :)

I wonder if the 3YL tach doesn't double what ever signal it receives, and that is why 1000rpm, shows up as 4000rpm.

The 3YL tach is receiving the RZ500 double pulse from the coil and dutifully multiplies it by 2 the way it would with the signal from the 3YL coil - and the end result is 2 pulses x 2 which equals 4.

Perhaps a tach signal modifier that filters the signal to a 1/2 pulse (2 divided by 4) may get the results I need.

Or again, there may just be a ghost in the machine.

Welp... no joy with the Zeel unit or the Baker unit even with resistors of differing values inline.

The 3YL tach looks so good, I refuse to give it up. I will be trying an SGI car unit next.

Tach issue partially resolved.

An SGI unit was the answer.

The signal dances a bit and I believe will need calibration - but the good thing is the TZ250 speedo is working with a modified signal :)

Well, it sure has been a while - but the OW54 YZR-Wannabe track bike is almost ready.

The TZ250 tack is working - if I cant get the calibration spot on I will just read 4000rpm as 2000rpm and 8000 as 4000rpm and so on and so forth :)

I took the bike for a shake down around the neighborhood. Everything felt good and solid. Just need new front brake pads and a few odds and ends - then off to the painters and ready for duty.

I am coining a new term - Retro-Factory look.

182lb Front
163lb Rear

345lb with 1 liter of premix, weighed on race scales.

The short list of paint schemes. And I am thinking of calling the bike a TZ500V - a tribute to the V4 TZ500 that never was :)

Yes, I have been dragging this image around with me ever since I stumbled across it on the Interwebs some years back - it has always had that certain "build me" look :)
It's almost there.

The 1KT tank helped pull the low slung ears back look of the TZ. And with this color scheme I can also hold off repainting the gawdy red frame for a while.

What's the story on that frame? Is it a modified RZ500 frame?

Yes, I believe it was modified maybe 15 years ago in pursuit of a solution for the perceived hinge-in-the-middle handling while under heavy race use by Tony Baker.

While the frame stiffening may have contributed to the overall stiffness, Mark Brown replaced the stock RZ500 swinger for a CBR400RR NS29 swinger when he took over custody of the the bike and it worked well.

He contemplated removing the couple extra pounds of angle iron welded to the frame rails but never got round to it - I am going to hack it all off now that I cut a piece out to accommodate the fairing brackets.

The ZXR7 front end, Brembo stoppers and NC29 swinger and Ohlins shock seem to work well together and to be honest, the placement of the frame stiffeners seemed arbitrary.

There are 2 frame rail braces under the tank that probably do more to stiffen the entire package than the bars down the side of the upper rails.

I have replaced the GSXR750 rear wheel with a Marchesini TZ250 unit that already shaved a few more pounds off the rear - the angle iron probably accounts for another 2 or 3 pounds, I have my eye on an aluminium 1KT tank to shave another pound or 2 off.

Eventually I will probably retrofit the entire bike into one of the RZV frames I have - that should be goo dfor another 5 pounds or so.

It certainly looks unusual and takes a minute or two to realize what it is. I agree with your thought that the exterior bracing likely isn't doing much. I doubt there is much torsion over that short length of frame rail. Perhaps the hinged in the middle feeling back then was partially due to the limits of suspension technology. The aluminum frame is stiffer and lighter. The RZ350 is truly hinged in the middle and does handle better with trussing near the headstock. The guys that raced the early TZs must have had their hands full.

One of the members here weighed the steel frame and the aluminum frame and the difference was exactly 10 Lbs. There are photos of them hanging on a scale in one of the build threads.

Found it...it was Paul http://www.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/viewto ... e&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Nice - 32lb vs 22lb.

That's an easy 10lbs then :)

I know I weighed the frames years ago, but differences in swing arm pivot bolts and brackets etc made me wonder what the true difference is.

Maybe I can get this bike down to 300lbs :)

330lbs fueled up would be a nice svelte weight - then there is just the 215lbs of rider + gear to account for LOL hehehe

Well - even thought I have sort of committed to a body style and paint scheme - I have sort of fallen for an even older bike that shares the same profile fairing...

The '78 OW31 YZR750. I have been thinking what woudl be involved to reroute a left hand pipe to the lower left to mimic the pipe layout of the OW31 as well. But I digress, I really like this color scheme as well. Very Gunston Cigrarettes like :) and the Duck-tail seat unit just sets the bike off perfectly.

I will also need to work out a much lower profile tank - but my thought was all these various tail piece and tank combos are going to all fit on the same bike - to give some visual variety possibilities :)

Finally the right tank has come up at the right price :)

I think this will help set off the vintage look. If we rework the knee profile a little bit it should pull the retro themed feel together.
