Who Knows About 3D Scanning of Parts?

#1 Post by Smoker » Wed Feb 14, 2018 8:28 am

I took this kickstand bracket to the local machine shop to see if they could copy it using titanium.

The machinist said it would be best to use a 3-axis CNC machine, which they don't have.

So, I guess I need a CAD drawing. Was thinking it might be easiest to use a 3D scanner, but I know nothing about them.

The part I want to scan is about 4 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 1 inch. There's a pin in the part, but I would just drill an 8mm hole and weld in a pin later.

Is this a scannable part, and who could do the scan and CAD drawing? Cash in hand.

Most machine shops will have a cmm capable of scanning your part. Finding one that will do it for you may be difficult though.

Does it need to look OEM? If not, you could make it a two piece weldment. One piece with all surfaces parallel to the bottom. The other with most surfaces parallel to where the kickstand mounts. Have an angle milled on it to locate it for welding.

You got that right. Most companies with these expensive machines hang up on me when they find out I only want one piece fabricated. However, if you saw the titanium relay arms I posted, it can be done.

That's a good back-up plan for the fabrication. I want the bracket to be one piece (except for the spring pin), but if I can't get it machined in one piece, your idea might be the way to go. Definitely does not have to be an OEM replica.

Thanks, Paul!

I haven't spoke to Dean for a long while. Forgot they do WAY more than swingarms.

I had approached him about a one-off swingarm for the RZV roller, but he wanted the whole bike.
