RC45's Project 'S for Satan' - TZ250S 1RK Serial #2 TZ535

#1 Post by RC45 » Sun Aug 17, 2014 4:44 am

So we have the NS500 in progress (and a complete NS400 on the way), OW81 in progress & ride-able OW54 in progress.

I have a spare TZ250 4DP rolling chassis (tank included) and a spare RZV500 roller on hand.

Ideas please.

Maybe a CRF450 diesel or CR500 smoker in the 4DP dressed up like a Marlboro YZR250 GP racer from the mid 90's?
Image

Perhaps 530cc+ all out take no prisoners RZ350 or a billet 3 cylinder RZ in the RZV500 chassis with the 3YL underbraced swing arm all dolled up to look like Kenny Roberts Daytona winning YZR680 OW60/9?

I vote for the 3 cylinder. That set up has always intrigued me. I don't think anyone has done it either.

OK - another crazy idea being bandied about.

The big bore RZ350 into a 1KT frame that I just accidently bought... well?

Or maybe the 3MA engine into the 1KT frame?

The TZR350 is a nice idea. Even better as a big bore. Just need the cradle and custom pipes to make it work. I've seen a few and it's a nice fit. Glyn at GPL Racing makes the cradle and pipes. I almost did it with my 2ME but decided to do a stock rebuild instead.

If you plan to fit an RZ350 motor in the 4DP frame it is a fair bit of work as the 4DP frame is made for the Vtwin motor which as you know has a stacked gearbox ect to make the motor short, its much shorter than the RZ350 which has the crank & gearbox all inline.
I had the same issues when fitting the RZ535 motor in the TZR 250 3XV Frame as again its a short motor being a Vtwin.

It can be done but its a bit of a pain.
If your going to put an RZ motor in any other "TZR" frame I would put it in the 3MA or 4DL frame as these are both longer than the 3XV or "4DP" so you wont have the front wheel clearance & radiator problems that I had.

The exhaust clearance can be got around by "splaying" the front pies as the exit the cylinders (like the old RD400 style)
As for the radiator I had a 50mm core radiator made to give it the max capacity I could due to the small size before the wheel would strike it under very heavy braking, I also ended up fitting a secondary radiator in the nose fairing as the lower radiator still wasn't sufficient to keep the big bore motor cool.
Like I said it can be done, however with all the other projects you have got going, this is a lot more work than it first looks.

Note:- holes in fairing to allow air into the top radiator.

I hope this helps.
If you want more information just call me as you have got my number.

Best regards

Johnny C.

Johnny, thanks for the reply. And I will take your words of wisdom to heart - "this is a lot more work than it first looks."

BTW I have got the other fairing out and sized a couple boxes - will get around to boxing and posting off. The US Postal Service is by far the cheapest option. A couple hundred vs. $1000 for FedEx.

Well - this one is going to be interesting I guess.. or may be a non-starter from the get go.

:)

I have a TDM850 twin diesel motor inbound. At least I hope it is a TDM and not the XTZ motor. It is going (or at least will be attempted to be stuffed) into the 4DP roller.

Image

So far it's 4DP1 frame, tank and tail piece, 5KE swinger, 1999 R6 forks and 3TC wheels.
Lots of TZ odds and ends - fairing stays, cushdrive, clip-ons, food pegs & pedals. Ti rear rotor, floating cast iron fronts with Gold Brembo 40mm calipers.

The street race 850 twin was called the TRX, the GP bike as the YZR, the customer racer the TZ - would that make this a TZX850??

I think I do like these colours after all :)

This motor has turned out to be a lot bigger than it looks. In short, it is a lump :)

So it is back in the wooden shipping crate and sitting at the back of the storage waiting for another project.

This is an interesting idea. It seems it was done back in the 70's.

Here is a TZ350/3 circa 1978.

And again in a street bike RZ.

With this in mind an RZ350 motor is going into the TZ250 1RK frame I procured in the Land of the Rising Sun.
If it fits then the bike will be clothed in proper TZ250S bodywork and I might finally have an easily and cheaply maintained track day bike.
Then perhaps one day it can be reworked into a 350/3. :)

The first ingredient that's going into my silhouette GP track day bike recipe has arrived from Japan.

1RK frame serial number 2 - this may be for all intents and purposes literally the original Deltabox customer race bike. 8)

Image

The general idea is to shoehorn a big bore stroker RZ350 in the 1RK frame, suspend it with 1988 forks and shock rolling on a pair of light weight Marvic mags and clothe it in 1RK bodywork.

I am not sure about the colour scheme.

How about contacting Matoon machine for their 3 cylinder billet cases.
They offer a wider spacing with bigger bearings that could be equipped with CR 500 derivates like the CPI Liger.
It would give you a 1.5 - 2 liter twostroke with some 180-270 HP.

Crazy and unique enough ?

The reality of the 3 cylinder billet cases is that they are heavy and wide - not the best choice for a TZ-sized bike. If they could get their 3 cylinder footprint into the same size/weight as these 3 cylinder RZ case builds from the 70's and 80's it would be feasible.

Here is a TZ350/3 circa 1978.

I am very pleased with this latest find - complete 1RK footpeg hangers, pegs, brake pedal and shifter, tacho & clutch lever.

All I am missing now to do a complete 1RK silhouette build is a front brake lever & reservoir and the swing arm, I guess I will just have to fabricate a reasonable facsimile - finding a pukka 1RK swinger is proving very difficult.
