Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Have you considered approaching Jim Lomas and asking if he can do it for you? Send him the specs and an explanation and see what he has to say. If anyone could do it perfectly, it would be his shop.

Is it possible to show just one piece with the dimensions?Speed Freak wrote:is this what you are searching for?

Thanks!

This might work, or they might want a CAD drawing they can use for programming.
Made this with my phone. Sending now.

Instead of the 35.19 dimension, you should draw the two 15 deg angles.
Basically it translates to: Cut that fucking tube to multiple 75.92 mm lengths with two fucking 15 deg angles on each fucking side.
(Note the simple speech to be understandable to average machine operators?)
If I were you, I'd drop in and explain them personally to be sure they don't screw up the expensive tubing.
Maybe its even possible to have a meal somewhere and pick the result up afterwards.

It's a good idea. Lomas makes cool pipes, although I've never seen him work with titanium. I'd have to check on that.silverstrom wrote:Have you considered approaching Jim Lomas and asking if he can do it for you? Send him the specs and an explanation and see what he has to say. I think one issue is, I'm only asking for tube cutting. Maybe big shops aren't interested because I'm not asking for a complete project. Cutting tubes for someone else's project could be viewed as grunt work, and certainly not interesting in terms of dollars and cents.
Welding the tube pieces is not an issue. I'm confident that Dimestak would do the welding, and he's the best. The plan for now, is to send the pieces to MK for welding. Working on the urn is good therapy for me, and I think it will help MK, as well. It would be cool if the whole project could be made by myself and friends only, but as usual, my ideas are not always easy to fabricate.
I did get a reply from the laser cutting shop. Not a yes, but at least they acknowledged my email.
The 12-sided tank is only the first part of the project....
Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Maybe I should mention it now, since I'm working on the tank construction.
One of the 12 (pie cut) pieces needs a hole for the filler neck.
Haven't drawn anything yet, but thinking the OD of the cap on the filler neck should be 3 inches. The filler neck should be as large as possible, so maybe close to 2 1/2 inches. It's a large hole in comparison to one of the 1mm thick pie cuts, so I'm guessing it would be better to cut the hole after welding the tank.
Could probably mask off the tank very well, and cut out the hole nicely with a dremel tool.

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Ask them, if they can 3D cut it, too.
(Not sure if it's possible, maybe need an insert to avoid cutting the opposite side, too.)
Don't worry about the welding.
Distortion on titanium was pretty low and I'd close that hole with aluminum tape anyway to purge it properly on the inside.
Parallely I could try to drill a hole in my tube samples and widen it with standard tooling.
(I doubt it'll be easy ...)
PS: From own experience and what I heard of Lomas, I doubt he'll answer at all.

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Received the response from Serra Laser:
"Got it.
1. Price to make 16 = $225 lot charge
2. Price to make 100 = $4.95 each
3. Price to make 500 = $4.45 each
All cuts normal to the surface
5 - 10 days for delivery.
We would make these in our Sun Valley facility on the Mazak Tube laser we have."
I did mention that I'd like to start with a "small test order".
All good. I didn't expect laser cutting to be cheap.

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Looks like they could easily cut the filler neck hole.
Might be too expensive, just for one hole, but I'll ask.
Here's the machine in action:

Just stumbled over this on FB (rate my weld group):

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Wow, Martin!
Amazingly appropriate photo for this thread.
Looks like four 90 degree sections. The four pieces are tacked, but not tacked together.
I'm absolutely stunned by this tack welding. Never seen anything so accurate and precise. Would definitely love to know the technique used there.
The cuts also appear incredibly precise.
Now that we have a shop to do the cutting, I'd better figure out how the front and rear plaques, and the stand, will be attached to the tank. Better also think about the cap design, to make sure the hole size will be correct. Best to know this stuff before cutting.
I'll get some more design details posted. I think you guys are going to like my ideas.

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
I knew you'd love it. Basically it's what you have in mind just with 16 segments and tiny bit bigger than yours ...
(Note the welding shield on top of it? Thats actually the size of a human head, which means the tube diameter is about 1 m ....)
And that's why it looks "precise" ... it's all about scale.
BTW: My guess is the order was to do 4 90 deg bends and they arranged it to a circle for a good pic.

Ha ha ha!!!
I saw that tiny thing on the top, but didn't realize it's a shield. I see it, now!
Very interesting. Can't imagine what that might be used for.
I'll get some more stuff posted later today.

If I'd take a guess then it'd be air ducts for a big building air condition system?

Re: Need Help With Tank Calculation
Interesting coincidence.
Years ago, my family gave me this traditional dreamcatcher. Might have been after I got my "Man in the Maze" tattoo.
When I was designing the urn, I wasn't thinking about the dreamcatcher. I was thinking about exhaust pipe pie cuts. I drew 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16-sided shapes. Just thought 12 sides looked the best.
I decided to put the 8-sided Kodokan symbol on one side because I'm a judo man.
Just coincidence that the dreamcatcher is 12-sided, and has an 8-sided basket. It's a cool coincidence, though.
While I'm talking about it, the other side of the (urn) tank will have my version of The Man in the Maze.
It's a cultural symbol from my family tribe (Tohono O'odham). More on my design, later.
I have a tattoo around my left bicep that's my own design which represents Choctaw "slash marks". My Mom is Choctaw, and it's an old tradition of Choctaw warriors. I'd like to machine the slash marks around the cap of the urn, just like on my arm.
Not sure what's possible, but this is the way I want to go out.
