Any Info On This Tank Cover?

#1 Post by Smoker » Fri Nov 17, 2017 9:07 am

Does anyone know anything about this tank cover?

I asked the owner for more pics, and he sent a pic almost identical to the original.

Also asked what it's made of, who made it, and how does it attach to the bike?
The owner answered no questions.

Thanks, Alex.

That's it for sure. Looks like it just attaches over the OEM tank with tape or adhesive. Of course, it's for sale.

Might be okay for my purposes. I'd rather buy an unpainted one, though.

They have been known to split during installation. It is two halves joined in the middle and fused during the manufacturing process. During installation over a tank that seam can pull apart. The fit over a tank is very tight. No tape, no adhesive. Talk to 2smoke about his experience. His split.

Got it.

Not sure if it would be easier to mod the Chinese one, or make one from scratch. I already have an RZ tank to use for the mold.

I would probably be covering the Chinese tank cover with carbon fiber, so no worries about splitting. There would be a custom aluminum tank underneath.

try to replicate shape of original tank using aluminium sheet instead to do an aluminium tank and cover it with carbon

A custom aluminum tank shaped like the RZ500 tank would be fantastic, but way beyond my skills. Not sure who could do that type of fabrication?

I was thinking about making a fairly simple aluminum "box" type tank under the cover, leaving room to hide electronics, or other items.

I could even cut out the actual steel (unusable) OEM tank, and cover that, inside & out. But, it would be heavier than an ABS/carbon cover.

Also got another pic, and found out it's ABS and is attached to the tank with with silicone adhesive.

Yep, mine split on trying to install it.
It's just hanging on the wall of shame.
You can have it for cost of shipping if you can use it Pete.

Thanks, BigGuy- but I said it wrong.

Said an aluminum tank shaped like an RZ tank would be great.

Should have said- an aluminum tank COVER shaped like an RZ tank would be great.

The idea is that I could hide a smaller aluminum tank and some electricals or other stuff for a naked bike.

Thanks, much!

Not sure what I will do, but I appreciate the offer a lot.

Did the part separate at the seam, or break in half?

Thanks again for your help.

I was feeling rushed to bid on the ebay cover.

Now, I'm thinking it won't be difficult to find and buy one of these covers, if I need one.

I'm going to back off for the moment and deal with my medical stuff.

Thanks for giving me one less thing to worry about. :smt023

It's just 2 little cracks. Easily repaired.
I will take some pictures and get back to you.
