Very nice work! A friend was reproducing these years ago and I recall him saying he was using a self skinning foam, which I believe is how the original was made. Your post made me curious and I found this; https://www.smooth-on.com/product-line/flexfoam-it/

They have a lot of how-to information on there and also have this product for refinishing urethane foam; https://www.smooth-on.com/products/urecoat/

Just thought I'd share it in case anyone was inspired to have a go doing it a different way.

Fantastic job.

Mine needs doing and isn't quite as worn as yours was, but the usual top corners in the dye are worn. I'm going to give your rework method a go.
