Seat cowl / grab rail configurations

#1 Post by 1601pete » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:16 am

Hi

I wonder if somebody can help. I'm just trying to find out the OEM factory configurations relating to the rear passenger grab rail and the seat cowl.

I have noticed that some bikes don't have the grab rail holes in the rear side panels and rear tail piece and therefore obviously no grab rail is fitted. Most of these appear to be RZV's but as the parts are interchangable between RZV's and RD they could be like ths on either model.

My question is which model had no holes for the grab rail? Or did it depend if a customer wanted the optional extra seat cowl and therefore they configured that bike without a grab rail irrespective of if it was an RD or RZV.

As far as I know, it was only the RZV that came with out a grab rail or holes in the rear upper panel. All the RZ500 I've seen or owned had the grab rail and the holes and I believe that is the same for the RD500 as well. The solo seat was an option and I think I paid approx $100 back in 1985 for it at the time of purchase.

Now I'm confused. So there were 3 models

RD
RZ
RZV

I thought the RZ was the RZV?

The RZ is essentially the RD with a different colour scheme - the RZ colours were very similar to the RZV. The grab rail on the RD was standard and the seat cover was standard as well in the UK.

To my knowledge :
European RD500LC (47X/1GE) : standard with grab rail and seat cover.
Canadian RZ500 (52X) : with grab rail and no seat cover ( but maybe as an option ).
Australian RZ500 (53G) : with seat cover but no grab rail ( replaced by a strap on the seat ).
Japan RZV500 (51X) : no grab rail. For the seat, the parts list indicates no seat cover but a strap, but many bikes have seat cover. So maybe as an option ?

Seat cover, no grab rail and no strap.
I'm not a complete idiot...some parts are missing.
