Alternative Clocks / Instrumentation for the 500
I want to change my clocks, I've got a mini fairing (Street fighter look)and only want a rev counter and temp gauge (like race bikes).
What type if any are the best substitutes for the RD 500 standard clocks.
Is it better to make up my own frame work (which isn't easily done) and use the original instruments?
Has anyone done it before?
Thanks

You might want to take a look at what I did to my RZ350. 2001 R1 cluster. It's small, light, and relatively inexpensive. The tach has the appropriate range for the RZ. You could choose to just leave the speedo unconnected but if you used the speedo, the US model will switch between KPH and MPH. Since the 500 fires every 180 degrees, the tach should work perfectly.
This is a mod I have planned for one of my RZ500s as well.

I am using a veypor unit - does most things (except temp, which is available with your original temp guage or many aftermarket digital ones are available for cheap) and is pretty cheap.

You could also consider led rev counter and temp display from Avia Compositi - they list an Rd500 applicaton www.aviacompositi.com or if you want a full display - try www.translogicuk.co.uk

I'm going to build my own with a 6" colour LCD. It will also serve as my rear view mirror with a small video camera under the rear tail section.
I should be easily able to have speedo, rpm, and temperature displays simultaneous. I haven't thought much on whether I will run alternate displays for some things like RPM. I would prefer to see an analogish version rather than a digital number changing.

Thanks for all the replys.
I see there's a couple of routes to follow.
Smutf : That's a good link you gave me with all the info needed, and most of the parts needed are quite freely available.
Steve : These clocks on that web limk are the berries... I phoned for a few options and prices... and would need to sell the bike to afford the clocks. But thanks.

My dashboard solution
This is an electronics SPA tach with digital speedometer function. Can also be programmed to measure accelaration, standing quarter mile etc.
Temp gauge is from RACETECH, requires different temp sensors.
The panel is from DUCATI 916, control lights made by owner.
I can provide wiring instructions if needed.

SPA Instruments
Does anyone know where i can order a SPA Tacho / Speedo online for delivery anywhere in the world?
Are all SPA tachos compatable with driving the power valves?
Cheers

Hi Steve,
Fantastic feature on how to do a R1 speedo/tach !!!
I live in the UK and was wondering what the following is exactly ??
Is this a trade name or a generic name ??
from your thread:-
Cherry Speed Sensor - $36.00 (Digikey)
I'm just wondering if I'll be able to source something like this in the UK with that description ?? Or is it likely I'd be able to buy one on-line ??
Cheers

Paul,
The speed sensor is a hall effect gear sensor. Pretty common part and you could use the R1 speed sensor from Yamaha but it's about twice the price. Cherry is just a manufactuer of sensors and their products are available at a viriety of on-line places. http://www.digikey.com and http://www.mouser.com Also, there is the cherry website as well for specs and such. http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/sensors/gs1012.htm
Now... just because the sensor works and counts teeth on my sprocket, it doesn't mean that the seed is correct. You need to get a SpeedoHealer to correct the speed once everything is installed. I believe those are a UK product anyway.
