Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Is your bike a Canadian one ?
Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
The regulator/rectifier can also leak current, it also warmup when charging the battery
when the battery is full charged then it starts to dissipate the heat to the frame
so better do the batterytest
Good luck

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
For the last time : charging circuit is not involved in original ignition.
Rz ron, it is important to tell us if your bike is a Canadian one, there is a security with the side stand that is only in this version.

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
It s not involved in the ignition but when faulty it can drain the current and then u ve no ignition at all
I experianced this already 2 times already on vtwins 4strokes
I woud not outrule it at all

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Btw Am driving a chevrolet cruze from 2012, one day it stalled suddenly when i put on the airco, I pulled the fuse from the airco and it started Wright away
The ignition is also complete separated

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Mario, what you say is right, but it does not apply to a stock RD500.
I could also write that clean air starts to smell if I fart. As true as your statement and exactly as helpful.
Technical background:
The CDI is not connected to the 12V system. It's getting the energy only from the source coils.
If anything drains all the battery, it will still work.
In most foulstrokes and cars the ignition uses the 12V from the battery to create a spark. If anything drained the bat the starter would not turn at first, but even if you push start with a completely empty bat (or without), it'll have a hard time starting (if at all).
And if you ever wondered where all that fuses end up: yes, they're all connected to the battery and thus can influence each other like you described.

All true Martin ,but then u asume earthlevel is 0 Volt

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
The pv servomotor also works without the battery, maybe when the pvs are stuck when heating up servomotor overloads or shortcuts ?

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
I checked the schematics again and Philip is Wright about this only the cdi, source coils, pickup coil and ht coils are involved ....BUT the regulator need to be disconnected also during the test coz they re also connected via the source coils
Good luck

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Phildu31, yes it is a Canadian model. But it no longer has the side stand switch. It has been removed. The bike has run perfectly before even though it has been eliminated. Ron.
Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Hello everyone, I also posted this message on the parts wanted section. Would anyone know where I could possibly purchase a pick up coil for this model. 1985 rz500. Thanks for all your help. Ron.
Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Hi everyone, when you measured the resistance on your pickup coil and stator coils, did you test for continuity to ground? as some times as the insulation brakes down you can get a short in the coil to ground but the winding still test ok.
Also the RD runs a wasted spark, so it must fire all 4 plugs at the same time, so if one plug, cap, lead, coil, etc goes short will that affect all the others?

Not quite all 4 at the same time. It fires opposing corners. Front left and right rear; front right and left rear.CDNeal wrote:Also the RD runs a wasted spark, so it must fire all 4 plugs at the same time, so if one plug, cap, lead, coil, etc goes short will that affect all the others?
Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
No, it is really a wasted spark. All 4 cylinders fires at the same time.silverstrom wrote:Not quite all 4 at the same time. It fires opposing corners. Otherwise that would request separate coils for each cylinder and 2 source coils rather than one.

Re: RZ 500 electrical problem
Yes. What I meant was cylinders 1 and 4 fire at the bottom 180 degrees of rotation. Cylinders 2 and 3 fire at the top 180 degrees of rotation.
With wasted spark you do need all the plugs grounded to look for spark.
