Bike shutting down

#1 Post by WaggiesRZ's » Thu Sep 29, 2016 8:10 am

Hi all I have a problem with my RZ500 starts runs but take it for a ten minute ride and it's like shuts down but turn the key off then back on and it kicks over straight away. Don't know if it's fuel, electrical because it sparks straight back up. Has anyone out there had this problem or would you know where I start trouble shooting. It's had a total rebuild cranks, piston n rings, carbi overhaul full gaskets n seal. Any info would be great. Thanks Waggie

Almost sounds like a fuel tank venting issue. That would be a good place to start.

Hi.
Since the only action you take is turning the key off and back on, you should take a look at your CDI.

Typically, when a CDI fails and then works properly again it requires a cool down period first, but anything is possible. It could be a corroded or loose connector. Cold solder joints won't normally start right away.

One more possibility is RF interference. Verify that you are using resistor plugs and resistor caps. If not, the interference could definitely impact correct CDI operation. When the engine stops the interference is gone and it will start again, only to once again have the same interference affect it until it can no longer cope and quits again.

Start simple, then get complicated...I would also start at the breathers, then start looking at the electrical elements...good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi.
Since you just bought it, there are many things to check before riding it.
A good starting point should be the service manual.

With BR8HS plugs ( but not BR7HS !! ) and 145/25 jets it seems to be a restricted RZV.
And it will be better to start a new thread.
