Lithium-Iron Battery

#1 Post by smokey » Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:45 pm

Saw an ad in Cafe Racer mag. for a lithium-iron battery. No acid, carbon composite case, very light weight. Website lists a replacement for the 12N-5.5 3B weighing in at less than 1 pound (422 grams), 3.25 pounds less than a lead acid battery. It appears the only downside is the price. Kinda salty at $100.
Anyone have any experience with one? I'm thinking of giving one a try.

I was going to buy one however a bike auto electrician strongly advised me not to, as they are prone to blowing up.

Yeah... these are the batteries that are blowing up in peoples faces in phones etc.

Not sure I'd trust it in my bike.

as for these batteries being prone to blowing up, are we talking about the right battery? there's lithium-iron and then there's lithium-ion, there IS a difference. lithium-ion is what powers our portable electronic stuff.

I just installed a shorai in my 500. INCREDIBLY small and light, comes with everything you'll need and then some! Very well put together piece! I LOVE IT! Won't keep the lights on for long when diagnosing things....but otherwise its AWESOME!

I'm running a shorai lithium ion, at .93 pounds-and it's a special gem.
I've used the same brand/type in my R1 for 3 years with no problems...and while the standard lead/acid needs a charge annually on another one of the toys- the lithium has not even required a trickle to stay hot.
I was skeptical too, but at $100- I feel like I got my money's worth.
The battery isnt as wide as a dollar bill, in either direction and only weighs .2 more than my battpac.
First generation lithium ions required a specific charger, and had problems if you applied to many amps, when charging- (most typically a problem when using a standard battery charger)- but they've come a long way from 2005, and I trust this one-more than I trust the conventional

Had mixed results with my Shorai lithium iron battery. Battery was ALWAYS flat when I would turn on the ignition after sitting for a week or more. The bike is rarely ridden and the #1 selling point of this battery (besides the weight) is the fact they stay charged for a very long time, and I'm pretty sure there is no computers on my 500 drawing any electricity when the key is off. Now, even after a lengthy ride, the battery is flat. Apply the brakes and the gauges go dim at idle.

Not sure if I got a defective one, but I never had great results.

Braaaaap.

Buy a 4 cell Ballistic, tiny, light weight and starts my 500 after sitting for a long time.
