Mystery Rings

#1 Post by Linx » Sun Jan 07, 2018 1:52 pm

I'm performing a total restoration of my 1984 RD500LC. After completely stripping the bike to get the frame shot blasted and powder coated, I found these 4 metal rings on the garage floor. They measure about 20mm across and have a thickness of a couple of mm. Does anyone know where they go?

Thanks

Back on the floor would be as good a place as any. They aren't part of a 500 Yamaha (unless they are a crude aftermarket attempt at imitating an exhaust gasket).

My apologies. I misread the scale. Glad to see you figured it out.

BTW, please make sure that your chain blocks inside the swingarm are a proper fit for the 17 mm axle you are using. The slots in the swingarm where your spacer rings fit should not be carrying any load.

If I disagree with everyone, that doesn't make me right. If I take the side of only one, it doesn't end the fight. If my position's strong enough from exposure to the light, you may see things my way when we share the same highway.

Well I found a home for them. Not standard I'm sure. I thought they might be spacers between the sub-frame and frame but they seem to fit in the swinging arm Axel slots. Maybe I have an RZV swinging arm?

Seems you have a swingarm for a larger diameter rear axle and someone has machined these spacers to fit your smaller axle into it.

RZV swing arm is the same as RD/RZ swing arm.

God knows what has gone on there then. Everything else fits OK. Are they both alloy?
