RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
I know several owners have posted about machining their own steering stem.
Does anyone have a drawing or measurements of the OEM RZ/RZV steering stem?
Thanks!

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Hi,
I see no-one answered yet - I don't have a drawing but would you like me to measure a stem up for you ?
Cheers

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
That would be great!
The info would be helpful for front end conversions.
If the measurements are accurate, I can find someone to make a CAD drawing.
Then, I'll find out about maching out of aluminum or titanium.
The lower end would be modified in the drawing to fit properly in the new lower triple, and the length could be adjusted, as well. I think some newer type stems also use a retaining ring or spring clip on the bottom.
Any suggestions/recommendations are welcome.

Ok - I'll get one measured up tomorrow for you.

Thanks, Paul.
Happy to reciprocate, if there's anything I can do for you.

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Thanks, again Paul for the excellent drawing.
Much better than I expected!
This could help many people with their project bikes. Like most, I have an OEM stem, but it's on my complete RZ500. Getting it out to measure would be a major ordeal.
I think fabricating a new stem is reasonable vs. using the 32-year old steel stem, welding up and maching the base, and making some kind of adapter for the top.
Custom triples will be a big step towards completing my RZ Streetfighter rolling frame.

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
I was surprised how complex it was - I think a custom one could be simpler - however I'm sure Yamaha didn't make it complex for the enjoyment of doing some extra machining ? - strange really
Because of the complexity I triple checked the dimensions - I hope it's useful to you - I used a vernier caliper - if you need more accuracy for the bearing surfaces let me know.
Best of luck with the project.
Cheers

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Did you measure the stem when it was disassembled?
I`m missing some groove on the lower end?!
Did not post the dimensions as mine is assembled and I can`t measure this (important) area.
The part isn`t that complex in mass production.
It`s a steel pipe pressed/drawn in shape and then machined in 4 places where it needs to be accurate.
As fully machined part you can make the 25,6mm part 24,9mm, all other dimensions have a function (inner bore only for weight reduction).

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Hi,
It was a complete stem and lower yoke (triple) - no evidence of any internal hidden structure - however there could easily still be something hidden away inside the lower yoke casting
Hope this helps.

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Yes, there is a round cir-clip groove cut in around a 1/4" ish from the bottom. This groove facilitates a round profile clip to act as a bottom or stopper for the stem. If it wasn't there as you tightened the crown nut the stem would just keep drawing through. I will look around and see if I can find that info? I had made a sketch of the stem while figuring out what was required to make it work in the R6 setup. Not sure if I kept it though?

Re: RZ/RZV Steering Stem Drawing
Smoker,
Attack Performance in Huntington Beach I believe has these drawing and can make you a stem. They've done other custom stems for me and I believe they did a stem for my RZV as it has Attack Performance upper & lower clamps on it when I bought it. Now that I'm thinking about it the 00-05 GSXR1000 stem may be real close to a standard RZV stem. Worth a call to them. L8R Mark

If anyone can supply details of the circlip groove I will modify the drawing.
