FZR400 Calipers to replace standard

#1 Post by V4 Heaven » Tue Aug 01, 2017 4:34 am

Hi all,

I've heard that the calipers from the FZR400 will fit straight on to the RD/RZ forks.

Does anyone know exactly which FZR400 model the calipers are from as I'd like to try some? Ie year and model designation.

Cheers.

I'm looking at Triumph calipers as a bolt on solution. While there are several with 83 mm spacing that should work, it is the stock RZ500 brake disc thickness that is a concern. Stock front discs are 8 mm thick. Most modern bikes are 4 mm to 5 mm. The stock RZ500 discs won't work with Triumph calipers as they simply won't fit so the only option is to replace the stock brake discs as well as the calipers. That is where I am with that process right now. Deciding how to proceed.

If you are looking at FZR calipers, consider the disc thickness before buying.

Hi,

It is the FZR400 3TJ caliper that fits - as said above the standard discs are too thick and will have to be replaced - The TZR250 3MA calipers and one of the TZ250 models Nissin calipers fits as well - I'm told the Triumph Nissin calipers are the better quality than the 3TJ / 3MA calipers - The TZ calipers are Nissin and excellent quality but don't have a dust seal so would need more regular servicing.

I've got the 3TJ and TZ calipers if you need to get any measurements from them - I'm in NW Leicestershire if you want to take a look.

Cheers both for the info. What discs are you looking at to use?

That is where I am now. Which discs to use. Maybe EBC?

The only problem with Triump calipers is the need to mill Triump off of the calipers. I believe Speed Four, TT600, 955 Daytona are the 83 mm calipers that will fit. Speed Four I know fit because I measured them myself.

What year(s) is the FZR400 3TJ ?

Not getting anywhere fast with FZR400 calipers. There are a pair on eBay but the seller says the centres are 78mm, hence not right.

Would Triumph Daytona calipers fit? They’re deffo 83mm centres but fill they fit onto the RD discs?

Triumph calipers won't work with stock 500 discs because the discs are too thick at 8mm. You need 4 or 5 mm discs. I checked here and RZ350 discs are the same diameter and bolt pattern as the RZ500. They are 5 mm (1986-90) and bolt straight on to RZ500 wheels and the Triumph calipers do work perfectly with the 350 discs. That is a common 350 modification. Just need to look at the offset on the 500 and need the calipers for that. That would be an easy problem to solve. Any disc made for the 350 would work and they are easier to find online from EBC and others.

As for the calipers, if it fits the 350 it fits the 500 83mm spread. The offset remains to be determined. Follow this link for some very useful information http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB3/viewtopic ... h+calipers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Jon's list doesn't mention the Speed 4, but I have measured them myself and they are 83 mm.

I did recently see a 500 with 350 discs on it, but can't recall, or didn't notice which calipers it had.

Not all FZR400 calipers fit - the 3TJ models calipers are correct - I've got a set if you want them - they're in reasonably good condition but do need restoring - I suspect the Triumph / Nissin calipers are better - perhaps with both you might need to change the master cylinder for best performance ?

What size is the RZ500 master cylinder? I believe the Triumph is 14 mm.

What model year is the FZR400 3TJ ?

5/8" or approx 16mm - I guess that's not the whole story though - leverage seems important as well - hopefully someone will give advice on this.

3TJ - 1989 to 1994
