Hi. Can anyone advise on the best way to renovate the exhausts on a 1984 RZ500?
They are in fairy good condition, but I want them to look like new (original). I've unbolted the end cans and wondered whether to get the exhausts shot blasted and repainted.
Any advice?

I wouldn't blast them, I wet sanded mine and primed and painted them with engine paint and they looked great,
I would try and keep as much as the old layer underneath as it is really well stuck on there.

I do all of my pipes the same way. Clean then paint with Tremclad High Heat Enamel. Never been disappointed. Extremely durable paint. Fully cures once you fire the bike up and tough as nails afterwards. Looks identical to stock Yamaha finish.

I've got a NOS pipe and it seems to have some sort of plated finish - chemically blacked perhaps ? - it almost looks like a dull black zinc finish - hopefully someone more expert will step in - most people re-paint with a satin black heat resistant paint - I'm told there are now some nice satin black heat resistant powdercoat finished although I've not seen this finish yet.

Depending on the finish before chrome plating it can be a gloss finish or satin black.

The original finish is largely in tact. I'll have a go at wet sanding and then painting with Tremclad. Ill post some pictures and share the results.

I've never wet sanded any pipes before painting. It isn't necessary. Go over them quick with Scotchbrite pads to scuff them up and that will be enough for Tremclad. The enamel is self levelling and will take care of any imperfections.Jarrettvp wrote:Thanks everyone.

Do it someplace warm and with low humidity. Clean the pipes well and make sure they are spotless with no grease, no dirt and no oil. Not even fingerprints. Hang vertically and spray with at least 2 coats. A few light coats are better than 1 heavy coat. The Tremclad High Heat Enamel is dry to the touch in 5 minutes. Follow the directions and you can't go wrong. I use the Gloss Black. It dries to more of a semi-gloss, which is perfect for pipes.
My TZR pipes done 5 months ago. Pipes only. Cans are black chrome from Yamaha.
These were done a few years ago. Still look the same.

Any high heat enamel should work just fine. I prefer Tremclad because it is dry to touch in 5 minutes and can be recoated quickly and handled right away. VHT high heat engine enamel should do the same job. It is available in matt and gloss black. I've never used it for pipes, but I have used it for cylinders. I'd test a small area before doing the entire pipe. Just to make sure you like the look. Typically gloss black high heat paint ends up being more of a semi-gloss, which is just about perfect for pipes.
After the pipes are painted and then get hot when you run the engine the finish is extremely durable. Until they are fully cured by that heat the paint may discolour if you spill fuel on it. Just keep that in mind when working.

Perfect ! Thanks very much. The pipes are in good condition already as the bike hasn't had many miles and it's been in a garage for 10 years in Queensland, Australia. I've cleaned them with a degreaser and soap & water. The surface has scuffed up with scotch pad and now I'm ready to paint them.
I'll post the results. I got my frame and foot rest hangers back from the painters so I'm ready to start rebuilding.

I've been debating powder coating verses paint. Powder coating is easier, but I am leaning towards paint to keep the originality. Yours looks amazing

I had the frame painted and the foot rest hangers were powder coated. They did a fantastic job for me. They also tapped out all the threaded holes afterwards to make sure I have clean threads. I had a big smile on my face when assembling it today. Have a look under engines. The same company did my engine.
