steering head dust covers
Hi friends,
I am using a RD500 triple clamp on my BIMOTA GT1 project bike (with a SZUKI GT750 engine). My steering head outer diameter is 56mm - now I am looking a the lower and upper dust cover to protect the bearings.
If I am not wrong, the RD500 steering head outer diameter at the top end is also 56mm, so the upper cover for a RZ500 (part number 47x-23415-00) should work on my chassis both at the bottom and the top bearings.
Does someone have 1 or 2 such dust covers to share, or is this still available?
Hello Speedfreak,
I am counting on you - I hope you have the CAD file for this cover, would you share the dimensions with me?
Here is the frame finally painted:

Hi Wolfgang,
The frame looks fantastic - you'll be pleased to know that 47x-23415-00 is still available - they're just under £5 in the UK
Cheers
Paul

Hi Wolfgang,
instead of buying an expensive Yamaha part you can use standard caps like this:
https://www.kk-shop.com/shop/kataloge/d ... 20/120.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Not the right dimensions in the link, but there should be something in google when you are searching for "verschlusskappe" or similar.

Re: steering head dust covers
Part number 47X2341500 is no longer available from Yamaha but part number 3EN2341500 will fit.

I dont understand this. The headstock outer diameter is 56mm, and the dust cover is 60mm. There is a 2mm ring gap around, how does this seal against dust and water then? Is there some rubber gasket at th edge of the cover for sealing?Speed Freak wrote:Hi Wolfgang,

Re: steering head dust covers
I was also wondering about this.
The lower bearing is sealed, the upper is not.
There is no rubber seal inside the cap and no sign that there was one.
Can someone confim this?

Your Bimota frame is Gorgeous !
No seal on the dust cover on my 47X neither.
Here is what it looks like once assembled.

Re: steering head dust covers
Am I right in thinking that the first part of the yamaha part number refers to the model but the remainder refers to the part, such that the following part number (136-23415-00) is the same part as (3EN-23415-00) which replaced the original RD/RZ500 part (47X-23415-00) which is no longer available.

Re: steering head dust covers
First part of the number 47X - XXXXX - XX - XX shows in which bike this part was used the first time (except standard parts like bolts etc, they have a different numbering system)
Second block is more or less a standardized system part number which is defined by the function of the part. Rear wheels will always have the same number XXX - 25338 - XX - XX
Third block is for part version.
If there is an issue or change necessary they change it to XXX - XXXXX - 01 - XX or XXX - XXXXX - 10 - XX
I don`t know their exact strategy behind the versioning.
But in general the 01 / 02 /03 ... should be a minor change like different coating and 10 / 20 /30 ... should be a bigger change.
Last 2 digits (often not shown) are a color code if there are different versions available.
Now to your question:
It`s possible that 47X parts are reused in other (later) bikes.
Best example is the 47X swing arm pivot, it`s also used completely unchanged in the YZF600R 15 years after production stop of the RD.
In other cases they make changes on the parts for a new model, then it gets the first 3 digit number from the new model.
In case the part can replace the old part from technical side they stop the production of the old part.
When the stock parts are sold they supersede the partnumber.
This parts will do their job, but they can be totally different to the initial part.
This happened with some gear wheels of the R1. There you order RN01 parts and you get RN04 or RN09 parts which will also fit.

Re: steering head dust covers
...so you think the rd350/250 one may be different? (part number 136-23415-00)

Re: steering head dust covers
3EN-23415-00 will fit the RD500 as it replaces 47X-23415-00
From pictures it looks quite the same as the 47X.
Maybe different coating, material, manufacturer...
136-23415-00 looks like it has a smaller outer diameter and a deeper skirt.
It`s like comparing the RD500 and the R6 rear wheel. Only because they have the same numbering middle section it doesn`t mean they will fit "plug&play" to both bikes.
They only have the same function but can be totally different.
