Rear shock linkage.

#1 Post by Jarrettvp » Mon Dec 26, 2016 6:12 pm

Looking for some help. I made a school boy error trying to remove the linkage for bottom rear shock on my 1984 RZ500. In doing so, the linkage swung round and I sheared off the two grease nipples (see below). Any idea on how to get the the sheared off grease nipples out and where do I get two replacements?

How do you get the pivot bolt out? The Allen bolt in one end is impossible to get to and the 10mm bolt at the other end is tight as hell and I'm worried it will snap if I apply any more torque.

An easy-out will remove the broken nipples. They are standard nipples and available from most automotive suppliers.

For stuck bolts try heat.

You can still get the nipples from Yamaha, part number 93700-06005

Try to rotate the bolt, never try to loosen the "nut end".
It`s a special nut which shears off quite easy, this small hexagon head is only for holding the nut while tightening if the friction is not enough to do that (again, only apply torque to the bolt while tightening).

Interesting to see the differences of the frame. Mine doesn`t have this cut out where you can see the bolt head and the nut (1GE bike).

How do you get an Allen key in the frame to get to the bolt? It isn't that easy as it's quite deep into the frame and whilst you can get the long end of the Allen key in, the short end won't, so you can't get any leverage.

Ahh. Now I get it.

Thanks very much. I'm off to the shops to see if I can get me one of those.

Cheers

Pleased to say your advice worked. Had to use two hair dryers to heat up the nut side of the linkag ( care of my wife - who was not impressed). As soon as there was some expansion, the bolt cracked undone and everything came apart. Thanks a lot - much appreciated.

Now I can send the game off for vapour blasting and repainting.

Use the long end and slip a suitably sized box end wrench over the short end for leverage, I use this all the time. It doesn't have to be the same size as the allen key, just smaller diameter than the length of the short end of the allen key.
