Modern rubber on the standard wheels?

#1 Post by w3a51l » Mon Oct 17, 2016 6:56 am

What tyres are people using on the standard wheels these days ? I'm familiar with the Metzler and Bridgestone offerings, has anyone tried the Pirelli Sport Demon? Any other stickier options around?

Continental has introduced radial tires in 18 inch.
It's the classic attack or the sport attack 2 CR.
Unfortunately they only support 18 inch, not the 16 inch front.

Thanks MK. I think I read somewhere that radials and crossply tyres should not usually be mixed but I can't remember the specifics.

Rubber compounds change as technology advances, the bt45's are not of the same compound you could buy 14 years ago, Its mostly in our heads, I have a friend with a road reg CR500 still on 18" 21" wheels and using bt45's on a track day he was getting his knee down.

I'm running Pirelli Sport Demons on my RD. I am on standard sizes front and rear and they work great!

I switched from BT45 to Avon AM26 and the difference is obvious. The AM26 is a much better tire as far as I'm concerned. Quieter with better traction and handling.

Seems that Dunlop has a "new" (2013) tyre - Streetsmart
Available in 120/80-16 and 130/80-18

I know Dunlop tyres from my NSR125 - they were the worst shi* I have ever used...
But 3-4 years ago they started to sell quite good stuff for modern bikes (Dunlop Sportsmart, Roadsmart, also D211 GP Racer and KR slicks for the track).

Maybe worth a try, even if they are not really "sport tyres".
And in my opinion they look good.
My bikes:
RD500 YPVS 1GE
RD350 YPVS 31K 1985
Honda CBR 1000 RR SC57
Yamaha R1 RN04

Was just at a CMRA race a week ago and a guy was running some Shiko slicks on a FZR 400. Said they were good but who knows. I like the newer rubber for track and would prefer not to find out what is not good. We should never ride our street bikes to the limit in my opinion.

My theory is that if you are able to ride your street bike to its limit, you need a different street bike.
