RZV Frame Material

#1 Post by Smoker » Mon Sep 07, 2015 5:43 pm

Does anyone know what type of aluminum the RZV frame is constructed from?

51 views and no responses.

The question I'm asking is probably not a good one.

Unless someone has tested the aluminum, or read about someone who did - how could anyone know for sure?

Pretty sure parts made of 6061 will weld okay to the RZV frame.

Many have welded on a lug for a steering damper. Perhaps asking about that process will yield more answers.

Weldable aluminum extrusion...I cant see it being anything but 6061 but I don't have that info.
The anodising could be a problem for clean welding.

That's a good point.

If I weld anything to the aluminum frame, the whole frame will need to be powdercoated. So, it might be good to strip all the anodizing, first.

Originally, the OEM RZV frame was anodized AFTER it was welded.

Perhaps re-anodizing could be done sucessfully after welding the frame. I believe it has to do with the particular aluminum alloy and rod/filler type used.

smoker I'm curious. what part of the frame are you welding? the reason I'm asking is that when I have my engine build. I will have a subframe build to it after I removed the rear part of the frame.

Your bikes always look close to OEM.

Why are you changing the subframe?

Clearance for custom pipes? :smt102

I'll answer your question in my project thread.

Yes. the rear pipes on the RZ or RD or RZV500 are very limited for space. What I plan to do is have the rear part of the frame cut off and a subframe build to accommodate pipes with bigger cones. The new subframe will probably not be welded, but instead bolt to the main frame like the TZR250 3MA subframe. Then the stock body work will fit to the new subframe. I still have several projects in the works.

I'd like to know which part of the RZV subframe needs to be wider for larger pipes.

I guess I can pull the seat and bodywork off the RZ to take a look.

Smoker,

I should have posted this at the beginning. Brian welded a while back brackets to accommodate the body work of a 1992 FZR600 on my RZV500. The FZR600 with a singular headlamp. I just read your posting again.

If you have a look into welding material tables you'll probably find that AlMg3/5 will weld 95% of all possible alloys.

I've been using it on a couple of frames(RGV ,KFX)and even on a MX swingarm conversion that's used off road.
All customers are still alive ;-)

I hope you done mind me jumping in here, I just picked up an RZ500 today and a RZV500 frame, The frame is pretty tarnished, Is powdercoating the only way to restore the frame,
I dont want to polish it or have a frame that needs to be maintained..
