Forks

#1 Post by Blowin smoke » Mon Nov 17, 2014 2:53 pm

So Im looking for opinions
85 rz500 10,000 Kms I have hade this bike for about 6 years and only ride it a few times a year, felt a bit guilty putting miles on it plus it had charging issues which are now fixed, and now want to ride it more, as to the forks they were weeping so I had new seals put in last year, anti dive unit is in place as original, now the problem... When I push on the forks they compress and only partially rebound , could there be air in the system? Low on fluid? Makes for an interesting ride.....
Something done wrong during rebuilding?
I also have a 92 fzr1000 at my disposal it has the usd inverted forks, is this a good swap for the 500 ? Easy to do? Cost? And what about the swing arm can I use it also.
I am very hesitant to change things as my bike is very original I am 3rd owner and the 2nd owner bought it as an investment and didn't ride it.
Thanx
Marc

Sounds like at least one of the forks got slightly bent at some time. Or an issue with the fork bushings.
FZR usd forks are a great addition. But to clear you have to modifify the front fairing birdcage, lose the stock front signals, 2T oil tank and coolant tank have to be moved or modded too.
Look at Nicks bike from a long time ago here:

Hmm ok I didn't think about the possibility of the forks being bent, I will look into that, I saw nicks bike in person a few years ago at Laguna secs moto gp, nice bike, mine was there too, I'm trying to keep the bike as original as possible because it is. But if the forks are damaged then I'm forced to change, and when change is needed change for the better !

there must be lots of original rz500 forks available from people upgrading to later versions .
surely if it is a nice original # matching bike it would pay to keep it so.
thanks mark
She might not be pretty but always a fun ride !!
