#1 Post by two-stroke-brit » Mon Oct 20, 2014 3:06 pm

hi all i hope to looking at a couple of rz500 in the near future one is a 85 not sure of the other one yet both are Canadian origin ,
what were the number range of the various years ,
is there a photo example what they should look like, as in untampered, on a serrated background .

Steve Jackson is the expert on this and please correct me if I am wrong Steve!

I believe Canada got 3 production runs.

52x000101-000600 probably arrived in late 84 ...early parts look like 47x bikes

52x004101-005500 1985 models....newer parts look like 1GE bikes

52x007101-007250 1986 models...even more new parts...the end of the road

I have owned bikes with serial numbers in the first 2 production runs so I can corroborate this.

I have one from the first group 000359 and one from the second group 004946. Both are 1985.

John, does the low number bike have 47x type parts like the upper triple with no loop around the ignition switch?

The top clamp doesn't have the loop, but it could have been replaced years ago. It does have round exhaust flanges. Build date is 5/84.

That's the problem with old bikes; many parts get replaced over the years and what is supposed to be on them can be quite different from what it actually has but most people would never know the difference.

Most won't be as historically significant as the one Steve shows.

How about the 2 stroke oil tank: black plastic= 47x (early) style.
See thru green plastic= later 1GE style.

I'd certainly say so. Pre-production is as early as it gets.
