Fuel lines.

#1 Post by PaulGreen » Tue Dec 04, 2018 11:02 am

Hi,
Are all fuel hoses made equal? Are some better than others?
I've replaced all my lines with clear ones and they've gone hard/brittle.

Could somebody point me to a decent source, preferably in the UK?
Also, are they 8mm ID?

Thanks.
Paul.

They are not all the same diameter. 2 hoses from tank to fuel tap are formed hoses, from fuel tap to the T-piece the hose has a bigger diameter than the other 4 pieces to and between the carbs.

Except the short bigger hose all hoses are still available.
You can take every fuel hose that fits.
Clear material is not fuel resistent, take NBR (standard) or FPM/FKM (viton) hoses.
EPDM looks the same (black rubber) but is not fuel resistent.

RD350 YPVS 31K 1985
Honda CBR 1000 RR SC57
Yamaha R1 RN04

Thanks for the info.
I'll have a rummage through the stock pile.

Cheers,

If you want to stick with something translucent so you can see the fuel in it, you might look into a F-4040-A spec hose. Its a Tygon PVC that's designed the work for fuel lines and is also compatible with the latest ethanol fuels (not sure if that is an issue for you in the UK).

if using clear hose, make sure its PU (polyurethene) also called PUR. Its fuel resistant.

I use OEM TZR250 and TZ250 main fuel hose on my special - the TZ is the smaller diameter and TZR is the larger diameter - for non standard use on the RD500 and for the fuel lines that you can't get as OEM for the standard bike - I got them from Denis Trollope Racing and Fowlers. If you check on the Fowlers website you'll see that most hoses are still available. Check on ebay as well since they're often cheaper there - they can also be much more expensive from one or two sellers as well !

I think its maybe time to go to Viton hose due to the ethanol in modern fuel - make sure you use Viton seals and diaphragms in the fuel tap and Viton float valves - ethanol plays havoc with the originals. I'm told Esso 97 doesn't use ethanol if you want to try and avoid the problem.

Cheers
Paul

I've no idea if the recently fitted float valves are viton or not. Is there a way to tell as I'll be inside the carbs again later?

Thanks,
Paul.

Hi,

I think the only way of telling for certain is to check with your original supplier. I got mine from NRP - I think Yambits do viton valves - the giveaway is they’re much more expensive than Keyster.
