Conical washer ??

#1 Post by Andy500R » Wed Mar 07, 2018 7:59 pm

So when my drive gear nuts came loose I just tightened
them up ,, after checking the manual there seems to be
A conical washer behind the nut , I'm sure mine hasn't !
Do I need this washer and if so what size thanks .

You absolutely need the conical spring washer. You won't find one anywhere except Yamaha. 90208-16019. From experience I know same part is used on the RZ350 and early TZR250. This washer is a unique shape and cannot be replaced with anything except the correct part. If you don't have one now and the nut came loose it's likely it wasn't installed the first time.

Here's something to keep in mind. That nut on the end of the crank is held tight by the conical spring washer. If the nut is loose, everything behind the nut is loose. If everything behind the nut is loose that means the spacer that fits inside the crank seal is no longer providing a 100% seal against the crank seal. In other words, if the nut is loose you run the very real risk of a crank seal leak. This I know from my own experience. If you pressure test the engine with that nut on only hand tight you will find a leak at the crank seal. With the nut properly torqued and using the conical spring washer there will be no leakage at the crank seal. Suddenly that $4 conical spring washer has significance.

You must use a blue lock tite along with the washer. Cheap insurance to keep those as well as the flywheel nut from coming off.
