Ring Gaps.......

#1 Post by steveho » Mon Jul 17, 2017 12:12 pm

Currently rebuilding a spare engine with +1.00mm Mitaka pistons, and with the correct clearance, my ring gaps are lower than Yamaha specs. Standard is 0.3-0.45mm, and I am getting around 0.2mm. Never had this before on previous 2-strokes, and am reluctant to file the ends of the rings to increase the gaps, as I reckon the gaps will increase rapidly as they bed in to the bored/honed bores....

Advice from the collective is appreciated.
Thanks.

Stick to the manual. If your ring gaps are too tight you'll have a far bigger problem when heat expands them and they have nowhere to go.
