Junk transmission bearing needed in USA

#1 Post by 2manyprjx » Mon Dec 05, 2016 5:33 pm

I'm hoping someone here in the USA can help here. I'm looking for the needle bearing that's on the left end of the transmission mainshaft. I know these are gold but I don't need a good one. It can be worn out, or the needles missing, broken, or pitted. As long as the outer shell is clean and good enough that I can work with. I've got a plan to give us another option when it comes to replacing this bearing. I also have another option for the right side countershaft bearing. I'll share these on the forum when I'm finished. If you can help, send me your Paypal address and I'll send you $10 bucks to cover shipping. Thanks so much.

Thanks for your reply. Time is an issue now and it would probably take a couple of weeks to get something here from Europe. I've already got a piece chucked up in the lathe right now that I'm going to make it from scratch. I was hoping to use the original bearing because all I needed to do was bore it to press in the new needle bearing.

Unfortunately, it's not a part that most guys ever see. Only the hardy dig into the motor and would have an old bearing in their shop.

Is your plan to recreate the bearing? Will you copy it exactly, or perhaps use a sleeve and different size bearing?

Watching this project with interest. Thanks for tackling it.

I know others have offered up some bearing options before but, if I remember right, their options were bearings that weren't as wide as the originals and used washers or spacers to make up the difference. What I'm doing will be the same width as the originals. There was someone on Ebay selling replacements for these bearings as a set but provided no info about what you actually were getting. Hopefully, I'll have more info and pictures up next weekend along with why I had to do all this.

Are you going to destroy it, or would it be returned unharmed?

Hi I think you still buy this bearing RPNA20/35, I have a spare if you still need one.
Cheers Ron.

Well, you schooled me on that bearing. I thought I had done my homework... at least recently. Looking at my old posts, I actually found that bearing 8-9 years ago but I completely forgot about it. That makes what I did a moot point now. Basically, I annealed the original bearing and then bored it to accept a new needle bearing.

For the right side countershaft bearing, I couldn't find any needle bearings of a suitable size that I could make work so I'm using two 16005 ball bearings with .25mm shaved off each side to get the width from 16mm to 15mm.

Some may be asking why I'm replacing bearings that normally never wear out? The rolling chassis and the engine, partially disassembled on a bench, of this bike were in a basement in New Orleans when hurricane Katrina went through. They spent about a week submerged in water. Most all of the engine internals were ruined. Thanks to Gus, I have new cranks. Through the forum, I also sourced all the other the other transmission pieces needed. I also have NOS Yamaha top end sets in both .25 and .50 over. It's going to be about a two year ground up rebuild. Since the bike was pretty cheap, I can afford to dump a bunch of money into it.
