How Are These Pipes Made?

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Its the same technique but robot welded on the joints and the can is human welded on hence the different pattina.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Thanks, Kenny!
Good to hear from you.
I'm still dreaming about exotic pipes.

Also crazy about this photo from Unobtainium Welding.
To me, this looks like stainless. Not sure. I would love to have pipes with colored welds like this.
How is it done? Are those even welding beads I'm looking at?
Is that "Unobtainium Welding" script on the pipe? How is that done?

My instincts tell me that BT doesn't fuck around.giron wrote:smoker

I need to know exactly what I want, have the bike ready, and be ready to transport - just in case he says "yes". I've also read that BT is a very desirable fabricator for race bikes, and I'm guessing there's no shortage of work for him. So, I think he would need to have some interest in my project.
Basically, I need custom titanium pipes. Should be no problem for BT. Then, I can get the pipes polished and color annealed/anodized from someone that does that kind of stuff.
I'm actually close to being ready for 3 sets of custom pipes.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Maybe this would be color "anodizing" as opposed to color "annealing".
I translated from Japanese, so not sure:
"Coloring processing is not painting but plating.
I can make such a gradation with the thickness of the oxide film."
I think the color anodizing is done with different voltages of electricity, similar to using different temperatures of heat.
Not sure if one technique is better than the other for pipes. Would definitely like to find a company that is experienced with coloring pipes.

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Started to realize that making pipes with more curves, helps to keep the length shorter.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Exactly Pete, but technically the length is similar but it ends up protruding less. The RZ in particular needs the serpentine style to keep the fat part of the chamber under the bike for the best functioning pipe design. Much more difficult on the Rz compared to the RG with the RZ's lay down lower cylinders. Same issue with the V Twin 250's. I have a pair of Nikons for my MC28 that are just wild with curves in the extreme! The lower pipe goes forward to get a large centre section under the belly of the bike as the lower cylinder is even below horizontal. The 250's breathe a lot more than the 500's so they need a fat belly in comparison to the RZ and RG unless they are ported significantly. The production Jolly's and JL's seem narrow and seem compromised by the stock swingarm particularly the GP design without a banana swingarm. I'm not a pipe designer for sure but I think the RZ lower pipes need to crossover to be optimum design. Definate eye candy in my opinion!

And especially on the upper RD500 cylinders they prevent the cans sticking out like they're about to poke out the eyeballs of anyone following you ....Smoker wrote:Started to realize that making pipes with more curves, helps to keep the length shorter.

Ideally the RZ uppers should cross over as well like my old Nikons do. Also, any backpressure issues having different length silencers top and bottom? I have some real short JL ones that would make a long set of straight uppers protrude at least 4-5" lessStarted to realize that making pipes with more curves, helps to keep the length shorter.

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
I see lots of pipes with this finish.
Is it mild steel welded with oxy-acetylene?

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Thanks, but doesn't answer my question because they don't show the pipes until they're polished, and the welds are blue colored with a torch.silverstrom wrote:Maybe this Pete https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGEkBf87vU4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Pretty sure their "coned" pipes are fake. Stamped pieces welded together, and welds added to give the "appearance" of real hand coned.

The main visible difference to TIG is the much wider heat influence zone with acetylene.

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
I posted these RZV500 pipes in my build thread, but they should be here, too.
The main frame appears to be unmodified. Would love to have pipes shaped like these. Note the lower cross-over pipes.
