How Are These Pipes Made?

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
The machinist has to wait for machine time, so it's going slowly.
Still have to cut radii for the headers and stingers.

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Hi Smoker, any "reactive" metal ( of which S/S is one) has to be back purged when welding otherwise it's heading for the scrap bin.
If only there was more free time.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
1.25 inch OD tubing for the stingers on these pipes.
Looked at LOTS of street pipes, and don't recall seeing tubing this large.
Using internal nozzles for tuning. I've owned a lot of pipes, but not like these.
Very interesting stuff.

Very cool!

Just received this photo from Mason.
Thought it's post-worthy.
Exhaust pipe spring hooks of my own design actually completed.

Titanium springs?
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Link??
I saw some nice blue titanium springs, but not swivel type, and also longer.
If appropriate titanium springs are available, I'd be interested.
The Akrapovic springs are used on the MMX500, so I figured they would be good- and replaceable. Once the custom spring hooks are welded on, it'll need the same length springs in the future.
The springs I'm using are also considerably shorter than other springs I've seen.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
I have at least 4 project bikes on the other (350) side of this website.
Don't want to double post too much, but I know not everyone is into the small bikes.
Will be fabbing up some tips to fit on top of the lower stinger couplings, so I can run open pipes- for general mayhem purposes.
Nice clearance for swingarm travel.
Full Monty.
Still needs spring hooks welded, and full polish. Stingers will be gold titanium nitrided.
There are also some one-off titanium parts I designed for the exhaust up in the tail.

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
that is going to be a sweet bike.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Looks like a Mori Seiki lathe in back but I cant identify one of the levers. Really cool stuff getting built.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Is this pipe outlet wrapped with carbon fiber on the inside???
Looks cool!! I wonder if it lasts, without getting burned?

Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
It's hard to tell, but I would have guessed that the cone shaped extension is completely carbon fiber.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Sometimes I think my brain is turning to carbon fiber.
Of course, it's perforated metal.
It's a good plan for my one-off open tips. Would quiet down the bark, and look good inside the slash tips.
My concern is that the perforated titanium might melt/deform in the TiN oven. Might need to use a heavy gauge.
Re: How Are These Pipes Made?
Considering laser cut cones.
Also working on my own silencer design. Never seen it done before.
Will not be the typical silencers, seen on most 2-strokes. More, soon.

Beautiful color tempering on stainless from the welding process.
Haven't seen stainless pipes with this type of coloring. Beautiful welding beads, too.
"The blue color on this stainless steel tube used in a race car chassis indicates a gas tungsten arc weld that reached approximately 1,000 degrees F."
