Fuel level in carb bowl with 24mm float setting.

#1 Post by Vonzipper » Thu Sep 18, 2014 2:38 pm

Hi guys I am in the process of setting up my carbs to the 24mm from 21 mm float height setting. I would like to know what the new fuel level should be when checking with the drain screw/clear hose externally method. It used to be 1.5mm in the old 21mm setting, but i can't seem to find a figure for the 24mm float setting. The fuel level I am getting seems too low and is about half way down the bowl, this does'nt seem right?. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

I have checked the service manual, but there is just the 21 => 24mm change listed.
No change of the fuel level (1,5mm+-1mm) on both sheets.

I think with the 21mm setting the fuel level was too high and they revised it to get the correct value.

Hi,

I think you're correct that the revised 24mm float height gives the correctly stated 1.5mm fuel level.

The Carburettor Revision page at the back of the manual shows 24.0mm +/- 1.0mm float height with a 1.5mm +/- 1.0mm fuel level.

Cheers

I just finished adjusting my floats this morn. Found one pin partially backed on one carb. Repaired pins so were tighter. I adjusted mine to 24 and upon starting spewed fuel from overflow. Readjusted and with checked carb together and ran drain hose up beside carb body. Opened the drain valve and adjusted the one which was leaking to match the upper carb. Fuel line was right at gasket level. In chapter 5 page 5-7.

Well went back out after an hour and dripping fuel. Ordering new float valves from Rick and shut off. It is nice to have the other bike sit for weeks without a drip.

Thanks for the replies guys, but since float height adjustments have a direct effect on float bowl fuel level it stands to reason that the old level of 1.5mm is incorrect for new 24mm setting. It has to be a higher number that 1.5mm to make the fuel bowl level drop and carbs run leaner.

After reviewing the entire service manual from cover to cover, I think I found the answer to my question in the Appendices Part 2. page 16. Its 3.5mm below the gasket face and this looks about the right level. Thanks for the replies guys.

Confusing ! - this isn't in my manual - however there is a carb revision page after the appendices that shows the 1.5mm level - this is a 1985 revision.

The main reason for overflowing on these carbs seems to be nearly always due to debris from the fuel tank and/or degraded 'Viton' tips on the float valves even when they look perfectly serviceable.

Thanks for this info, semms that they forgot to change this value in the 1985 service manual.
I have also the page with all new values of the 1GE carbs listed, but with 1,5mm fuel level.

I just installed new float valves. I used a large paperclip and bent in such a way to check the 24 mm level. It worked great instead of my small steel rulers. I could check each individual float on each carb. Checked fuel level with hoses by the carb bodies and all were the same. Fuel on prime and not a drip.
