Forum Downtime

#1 Post by hybrid » Tue Nov 20, 2018 10:55 pm

Apologies for the recent downtime.
We updated some libraries on the server that were no longer supported and because this forum software is so old, it was not compatible with the new libraries.

It's been a major pain in the rear to upgrade the forum software and it's not over yet, so bare with us :smt017
The old theme is not compatible with the new version, so the site may look different from now on.

Serious withdrawals during morning breakfast. But thank you for your efforts. Hopefully you’ll have the forum smoking again soon.

Managed to whip up a theme that's pretty similar to the old one. I know it's not exactly the same, but I can't remember exactly what the old one looked like now.

Only big theme difference seems to be the posters details on the right instead of left.

just an observation, don't know if it's just me but, "new posts" and "active topics" links don't seem to be working

I know it's a tremeodous amount of work you're doing, and I hate to nit-pick, but is it possible to do something about the way links are currently opening? Right now if you click on a link it opens on the same page and takes you out of this forum.

I agree John, I much prefer a new page. If its possible it'd be great to have it back to how it was, I keep opening stuff and then killing the page and wondering where my forum has gone lol

phpbb changed this behavour so that their boards were XHTML 1.0 Strict-validation compliant.
It can be fixed (see https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... w-windows/) and I will get to it some day, but right now it's very low on the priority list.
The other problem is, as soon as you modify core phpbb files (which this requires), upgrades become more of a headache.
With one extra click, you can do what you want anyway(right click the link, select open in new tab/window).

I have noticed that posting attachments is now very easy and very fast. Images are automatically resized so you no longer need to reduce your images to use as attachments. You can also now post 3 attachments rather than 2.

Attachments may well be removed eventually - I think this has been discussed before. There's no need to attach photos directly here when there's plenty of image hosting providers available that don't use up my server space.
It also increases the time taken and space required for backups.

You can do this very easily regardless how the link is defined : Just hit the CTRL key while clicking on the link and a new tab will be opened.

Yes this is very true. However, I do think it is nice to have the photo's with the thread. Postimage has been working great for me, easy and fast. It helps in continuity and aids in understanding throughout the tread. The broken links suck since Photobucket went south and repairing them is a lot of work. Hopefully we don't experience another fiasco like that again. This is the one thing Attatchments could prevent. Regardless, thanks for your continued effort in keeping this forum up and running, Greatly appreciated
