Re: RC45's Project-NS500 Replica - running NS400 inbound

Wolfgangh, I found this a few years back. Not to sure if it can help in any way. My other thought was Ian at Classicracereplicas converts these as well. Perhaps we can buy bolts from him? http://www.geocities.jp/ponsuke1jp/sub25.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That guy did make a couple extra sets of bolts over the years.

I have one set of his bolts where the bolt sheered while removing. I then bought another complete wheel from him with a different version of the bolts.

Last I communicated with him he was making up 4 sets of Titanium bolts that would sell for about $1500 per wheel - I declined participating in that exercise :)

I will try make contact again and see if he has any plans to make a few more sets.

With regard to the center bolts on the HRC race wheels, they are just bolts and nuts just like the rims.

The rear hub uses 1 bolt nut per hole - the front rim has a hole for the left and right spokes on the hub and uses a stop nut and bolt.

The street MS250 and NS400 and VF1000's use a stepped shoulder bolt to allow the bolt to pass all the way through the narrower ole in the hum.

The nut then fills the hole on the opposite side - where as on the race wheel the bolt fills the hole.

My basic message was that the race wheels use a regular part bolt washer nut setup while the street wheels use a special shaped bolt with a 5 pointed torx style bolt for no other reason than the hole is a different diameter and they didn't want owners to re-lace their wheels.

I believe Ian just reuses the factory bolts very carefully.

RS500 front brake rotors inbound - and I am working very hard to convince a gent to sell me the RS500 Comstar front wheel he has in his back shed :)

Slowly but surely we get there - 1 part at a time :)

Oh - and that guy in Japan that makes the custom bolts has 2 sets of wheels laced up with his Titanium bolts - at $2000 per pair  I passed on them.

You guys interested? LOL

Yeah, his price makes no sense with the lower current price of Ti even taking labor into account.

Just in case you plan on selling the GP Jolly's on the Ns400 track bike; I'm interested.

Well - went to pickup the bike today. Tried starting it and during the heat/humidity of the day (about 90*F & 80%) the best I got was about 10 revs.

Later at night temp was down to about 78*F and we managed to kick into life with full choke - fired for about 8 seconds and then died as if out of fuel.

Push starting we managed to get about 20 seconds run time and then died as if out of fuel. Sounded pretty wicked when it was running.

Will give it a proper going over tomorrow - hopefully just dodgy fuel filter.

Might as well tear into the carbs, clean the tank, and do a full service. I remember getting the last bike and was so ready to run it but did not. Took it apart to find a rat had built a nest out of fiberglass insulation in the breather box. Thank goodness I never started it. The new engine would have been destroyed.

Seller already had the bike started for demo purposes. It was part of a private museum display with the bikes supposedly stored in ride ready condition. Overall the state of the tank, rubber hoses, plugs and cables and lack of dust, cobwebs and grime all point to indoor storage.

The bike definitely responds to cooler lower humidity conditions by wanting to start first kick - mid-day heat and humidity look to dampen things :)

You used that word supposedly. I am sure motorcycle sellers are more honest than used car sales people. Kidding but you never know. If it was something I wanted to keep or make sure it is reliable I would start with the carbs or whatever it uses and make sure it is right. What altitude and area of country was the bike running? Put the bike in a climate controlled space where you know the humidity is lower and see how it runs.

Re: RC45's Project-NS500 Replica - RS500 front rotors arrive

Finally a bit of old race kit that fits with some old street kit.

The almost new RS500 front rotors arrived.

Now to see how the bolt pattern lines up to the VF1000R front hub.....
Image

What do you know... a perfect match!
Image

So while negotiations continue to try purchase a real NS500/RS500 front wheel, I will be able to lace up a 17" replica using the VF1000R hub, NS400 front spokes and NS400 rear wheel hoop. And when I feel the need for a 16" look-a-like I can just lace the hub to the VF1000R front spokes and hoop.

Even better news is that the entire recess bolt assembly appears to fit between the tubes of the ultra light weight RS250 forks :) The NS500 front end is finally coming together.

After a lot of negotiating and discussion and the exchanging of a large duffel bag full of money, I have a real geneeuuwine RS500/NS500 front wheel on the way :)

That reminds me, anyone interested in any brand new old stock ex-HRC Honda team Marvic Magnesium wheels in popular mid 80's sizes????
