I just love the Faraway Blue, but I might be slightly biased since I have a shed full of it here (350). Would love a translated version of the article.

I've sent it to a friend who might be able to help.

Two special bikes test .

With his 250 world title last year and his spectacular debut with the top 500 riders this season , Christian Sarron notoriety is well beyond the race track , he's shooting for the stars . Now the Sarron look is spreading and present in these two ''' special ''

Lets have a look today at these two bikes. The first one , a RD500 was done by Sonoto , the French Yamaha importer and also the main Christian Sarron sponsor . The second one is a RD350LC tuned by Stand Bastille , an important moto accessories dealer in Paris .

Remembering Hockenheim : The 500LC Sonoto

Lets begin with the big one , the 500LC . Just saying that this is a good looking bike is an understatement , in fact she's georgous . The dark blue with gold striping is awsome ; she look slimmer , better balanced and it's impossible not to compare it with the real thing , the one that Sarron brought to the finish line on the wet Hockenheim race track . It may look stupid but the look is catching up . This is what Sonoto were looking and it work . In launching a limited serie of 500 LC Sarron Replica , Sonoto tried to spruce up the image of this model agains the new contender , the Honda NS 400 R and the Suzuki RG 500 Gamma ; and it worked . With its new color , the yellow plate with its number 6 , the Yamaha is in front again. Above all , the Replica version that will be available this July will be sold at the same price as the LC was in ealier June at 40 981 Frs , the usual colors ( red / black and red / white ) will go down to 38 981 Frs .

It's a special bike that Sonoto gave us for this road test. One , it's the very first Sarron Replica in circulation and the main aspect of this bike is the two 18'' Campagnolo wheels with experimental radial Michelin tires . This exclusive modification on our test bike will transform significantly its behavior . This short road test gave us the opportunity to discover the 500 LC 85 with some mechanical modifications , small but significant : combustion chambers modified for a better flame spreading , a different ignition timing curve , a better insulations for the under seat pipes and a balance shaft driven by the rear crankshaft instead of the front one . This last transformation was done to eliminate the vibrations on the first production models specially at deceleration . All these modifications brought a better riding comfort without compromising the V4 caracter or performance .

Testing the radial tire with the 500 LC .

Michelin asked Sonoto to test their radial tires ( still in developpemnt ) on this model . To do so , they changed the original wheels ( 2,75 x 16 front and 3,00 x 18 rear ) for two 18 '' Campagnolo wheels , 3,25 in front and 4,25 in rear with a Michelin A59 120/60 x 18 in front and a very large M59 150/ 60 x 18 in rear . Good to know , the swap to a 18'' wheel in front changed almost nothing to the geometry of the bike , the bigger wheel is compensated with a lower 60 serie radial . However , this change modified the significantly the behaviour of the bike . The first thing that we noticed was a heavier direction at low speed , more resistance than the original set up and an exaggerated tendency for the wheel to fall by itself . It's the same feeling we got when we first tried the 16'' wheels . We get used to this very rapidly and that feeling disappears completely when getting to speed . As soon as we ride very fast , the radial seems to bring a lot of advantage with better directional and overall stability , more precise piloting and better absorption of rapid road bumps . You know the kind of bumps that make light front end bikes wooble . Nothing like this with the radial , the bike stay solid in place where a normal bike would suffer . Last thing with these experimental Michelin radials , the rubber sole resist very well to extremes riding like curve acceleration . The only reserve we have with these radials is a stiffening of the direction when braking late in a curve , they give the same impression as an anti-dive that is too stiff .

The radial is a very promising technology .

Photos :

The 500LC Sarron replica is sharing the look of the race bike . And these colors look so good on it .

The bike that we rided is and will stay the only one with with experimental Michelin radial tires on 18'' in. wheels.

The signature of Chritian Sarron is on each side of the bike .

Sarron - Replica the master's machine .

LIMITED SERIE

This year Christian Sarron's german GP historic victory gave Sonauto some tought . Since the trend is building Replica , why not do one with the unique Gauloise - Sonauto Design .

Page 27-28

Yamaha 500 RDLC SARRON Replica

This idea that was done rapidly had 2 advantages . To celebrate Christian's Hockenheim victory and put back the RDLC in front . The Yamaha was loosing ground in front of the competition with their race replica bikes .With its new color , it will challenge its rivals , the NS400 and the 500RG Gamma . All the fans that were dreaming are going to be satisfied .

The Sarron Replica share the same features as the OW 81 . Same Gauloise blue emphasized with yellow and light blue stripes .The yellow numbers plates are at the same place on each side of the fairing . Even the Michelin stickers are present on the lower forks for that racing look and the Sarron signature is present in white like a master's painting ,. Very classy .

You don't need very much to get that feeling when riding it . With a leather suit , a full face with smoked screen , every bikers on the street will think that they just met the real Sarron , it's magic . Technicaly , the Sarron Replica is a standard 1985 model , you can get all the info about it in the number 22 issue of Moto 1 magazine.

But the bike that we had was no ordinary with these special wheels and tires . It's very different from what you can get from the dealer's show room and it's a pity because these modifications really bring something to the riding experience . Working with the Sarron - Sonauto racing team , Michelin proposed to supply them with these experimental radial tires .

The radial are commonly used in racing , Michelin is now developping them for street use. Because the radial tires didn't fit on the original wheels , they had to change them . In front to replace the 2,75 x 16 , there's a 3,25 x 18 Campagnollo and at the back a 4,25 x 18 instead of the standard 3,00 x 18 . The bike geometry didn't change very much with the 18 in. wheel , the Michelin 60 series prototypes are low profile tires and they give the same wheel diameter as the original set up . We all hope that these experiments will benefit to the average street riders very soon .
These modifications really add to the riding experience , with them the Sarron Replica showed us some unknown qualities .

Mainly at the front , the front end is lighter and much more precise . High speed stability is also better and the wobble on the standard bike is gone . The shocks were tuned accordingly but I don't think that the tires are the only thing affecting the ride . They allow us to accelerate much harder out of the curves and they can take the power much better . With their soft compound we can lean a lot more in curves but the lower exhausts get dragged to the point of loosing the rear end .

The lower profiles give a bigger tire patch on the ground , you can brake later and harder without incidences on braking resulting in a feeling of security . It's harder to get the bike in the curve at first but you get rewarded with a very precise behavior once you're in it .

So if you are a Christian Sarron fan or just looking for a low production bike ( 50 units ) you will have to pay 40 981 Fr , that's 2000 Fr over the standard RD . This Sarron Replica is available since late July .

Coluche report on the French GP

This riding test took place at the same time as the French GP . We invited our best tester Coluche , comedian , humorist and social activist , he didn't wait too long to accept it , in fact he rarely miss the chance to be at the race track . After he waved the starting flag at the France championship at the Carole race track , Coluche paced the start of the 250cc Le Mans race with the Sarron Replica .

If he keep on , he could be president of the racing federation , why not ? In fact , Coluche riding for President of the Republic , I already heard this before . Like a lot of racing fans , Coluche was there to support Sarron . In his very personal style , he gave us this review of the French GP .

- If I had to choose a headline for the 500cc race , I would have written : Sarron head to head with Freddy Spencer .
This time , only 16cm departed them , we really tought that he would get Spencer or maybe we will have to waith the next time and Spencer should be worried about it . Sarron being a better rider than Spencer on wet track , I tought of hosing it but with too much people around , it was impossible . It's a pity , it could have been another Sarron victory and this in front of his french supporters . But the racing season is not over and Raymond Roche was there to save the French honor . Roche kept the moral despite a lot of problems this season . He was gratified with a second place in front of his leader , Eddie Lawson , Eddie made a spectacular comeback after a bad start .

What is interesting in moto racing is that fans are true specialist , car racing is much more difficult to appreciate , a lot of watchers don't even realize the difficulty of racing cars . Here at the French GP , almost everybody came with their bikes and know how difficult it could be for the racers to ride them fast . You just have to go to the Dunlop arch or the braking at the chapelle area and watch the fans reactions . Not much negative to say and it's a good sign , the fans are real connoisseur .

I spent a lot of time autograph programs , Sarron and Roche photos . I was there to wave the starting flag but there wasn't a flag at all , just a button to switch the red light to green . Just a pressure to start all that madness .

And there was this TV interviewer that asked Spencer if he tought that the racers were riding too fast , Freddie said , He man it's a speed race you know . I'm just asking myself if the TV reporter catched it all .

____________________________________________________________________________________________

This is the France GP as seen by Coluche . If you didn't saw him at the Bugatti track , I will give you a hint , I heard that he will give the start of the Bretagne 24H endurance at the end of the month . In the mean time , you can catch him every morning at 10h and 11h30 on Europe 1 radio .
