Dubsey's YZR500 in CMM

#1 Post by wolfgangh » Wed Mar 19, 2014 7:23 pm

Mark (Dubsey) famous YZR500 replica in GAULOISES colors is featured in the latest edition of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics. A great article about an exceptional bike! It is for sure worth buying the magazine.

Received a copy of the magazine today. Superb bike, but I already knew that from before. :)

Is it just me, or has there been an increase of RD500 articles in the British magazines during the last few years?

I noticed the same, prices seem to get up now pretty fast, at least in some countries. Here in Austria a top original RD500 would sell for ca. EUR 7000.- to 8000.-, but it seems in UK it is even higher.
On the other hand, project bikes have much less value here since we can't get them road legal.

I would get max. EUR 10.000.- for my YZR500 rep here, but a gent from another part of the world already offered me EUR 30.000.-, I still declined, it is unsellable.

Wolfgang, why can't you get project bike road legal in Austria? :smt017

I think it's for the same reasons they were going to introduce here about a year back, if you modified your bike in any way, it became illegal. Here in the UK they were even taking about if you changed a bike's exhaust, it was classified as a modification, so insurance became a problem, and therefore, you couldn't register it on the road.

Brussels gone mad!!!

I would've thought it would be the same across Europe? Aren't we all bound by European Law now?

Not at all. There are huge differencies in Europe. UK e.g. has "daylight MOT" I beleive which allows to have no headlights...this is unique.
In Austria in return I can register up to 3 bikes or cars under one insurance license, paying the premium only for the one with highest capacity, and of course only one license plate so that only one vehicle can be used at a time. Without this triple-cover insurance I could not never afford to have 9 bikes registered for road use.

I cannot use any aftermarket exhaust system on my twostrokes, only original ones. My friends NS400R cannot be registered any more since the silencers became too loud ( they cannot be opened and re-packed without welding which is not allowed as well). New ones are not available, and aftermarket are not certified and therefore no option. isn't this unbelievable?

Other wheels or tire dimensions? No way.
GRP aftermarket bodywork - absolute no-go

I am seriously considering to register my replica in any other country where its possible to get it done - any inputs are welcome. Holland may be an option, or Czech republic.

Here in the UK any 500 can be run using any manufactures pipes because the laws were made after the bikes, so they only have to obey the laws that were being used at the time of manufacture.
