Numbers and production dates

#1 Post by punch-sponge » Wed Mar 10, 2010 4:21 am

Here's the scenario. I'm looking to import an RZV500R, (serial number 51X-001369), into the US that is registered as a 1989 in South Korea. Typically, as evidenced on the registration for my RVF400 (1995 build date, 1997 title date), and as seems to be the case with quite a few friends' bikes, Korean titles on greybikes are issued according to the year of import, not the year of manufacture. I know, there's a good chance that this particular RZ is, in fact, a 1989, but it sure would be nice to make the 25 years for US emissions. So, can anyone give me an approximate build date from these numbers? Also, does anyone have experience with the US customs paperwork for this impending fiasco?

Thanks in advance,

Hi punch-sponge,I can only help with the date the bike was made .Serial number 51X-001369 makes it a 1984 bike.
Cheers Steve

I'm not sure how easy it will be to register it in the US in general, but in California, it might be near impossible. All that I've heard is how difficult it is to get a California plate. However, there are title companies out there that might be able to make it happen. That's what they advertise!
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks! But are there any ideas about how I would substantiate that 1984 build date? Is it that the numbers are sequential and 001396 is close to a "known" 1984 build date? I am well aware of the customs horror stories, but is there a success story out there? This is a nice, unmolested bike, I could have it for a reasonable price, and it would be great to ride it to VMD at Mid Ohio this summer. :)
