Did the RZV500 have Braided Brake Hoses for just the anti dive units from the factory?.

You know, that's one of those small differences I had totally forgotten about (I'm sure there are many more.... )

Here's a shot of the RZV on display in the lobby of the Yamaha factory in Japan... click on the pic for a larger view, zoom-in - then notice the anti-dive lines....

(Note the piano in the background... )

RZV500R front brake lines

#19 Post by 0094 » Wed Jun 11, 2008 1:19 am

Hi Tom, great you noticed this differance, the RZV500R has plastic coated stainless steel braided lines going from the master cylinder to the junction on the lower triple clamp, and from the caliper to the antidive unit, cool hey.

Talk to you soon.

Just out of curiosity, why are many of the engine parts also stamped 47X and not 51X? is it production times, haven't found any 1GE stamps at all yet? Hope I've got the codes correct.

I'm sure my original brakes had the transparant plastic covered braided hose from the brakes up to the master cylinder AND onto the anti-dive...

#23 Post by snimmisnai » Sat Sep 06, 2008 12:57 pm

Is 1984 the only year the RZV was produced?

Hi snimmisnai and welcome to the group. Its more likely it was made in 1984 or maybe 85.I think your bike is down as 1987 with the dvla which is incorrect but not uncommon in the uk.Cheers Steve

Steve, thanks. Yes the reg document says "Declared Manufactured 1987" and the first UK owner acquired it in 1993.

No idea, the owner wasn't that forthcoming. He had it advertised on ebay as "The European version of the RD500LC", so assuming he didn't know what he had I didn't ask too many questions.

"I've owned the RZ for 12yrs but it has not run for 5-6 yrs. First three digits of the frame are 51X.....havent been able to find the old MOT's."

"Yeah, mainly cosmetic. The frame is straight, the exhaust system,as far as I know, is standard. The bike has been outside (undercover) for 6 yrs."

It is was what he said it was, with some extras. Does anyone recognise the Ohlins Racing 516 rear shock?

According to the guy who delivered it, the owner was very sad to see it go. Thumb and under spring to mind!

Öhlins shock???

#28 Post by Grumpy » Sat Sep 06, 2008 7:23 pm

Are you sure you have the right number?
The correct Öhlins shock for RD/RZ500 is YA438, and there is no Yamaha shock with the number YA516.
Check the number and prefixed letters, ie: YA, SU, HO, AP
The older I get, the faster I was!

I didn't see a prefix. I just saw "Ohlins Racing 516". I'll check later today when it is lighter.

Shock ID#

The "Öhlins Racing 516" is printed on the Spring Clip and is just the part number of that type of clip.
The number you want will be stamped on the cylinder head, (top), of the shock.
