Going to look at an rzv500r

#1 Post by Messer » Sun Sep 28, 2014 4:27 pm

Hi all this is my first post and am actually new to the world of the rd500 so please bear with me.

I currently have an Aprilia rs250, rd350 ypvs n1 and honda ns400r rothmans but have been looking for a 500 and an rzv has come up that I am hoping to take a look at.

I was just looking for some newbie pointers to be looking at when I go to see the bike please?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Tony

Well, ask if the bike has been de-restricted yet. They were restricted in power for the Japan home market.
Ask if the motor has been rebuilt, what size oversize are the pistons, etc.
Yamaha only had 2 piston oversizes. After that you go to the aftermarket for pistons.
The age of these engines means worn out crank seals, worn out crank bearings, corroded leaking fuel petcocks, rusty fuel tanks, leaking fork seals etc.
If the bike is a minter have him start it up and prove it.
Because its a four cylinder with 2 cranks, it could cost twice as much or more to rebuild than all the bikes you listed.
Four carb rebuilds too.
Really just look at all the stuff you would on any 1984 bike.

Welcome and please stick at least your country under your username if you stick around.

And remember, maximum bore size is 58 mm.
