Key blanks

#1 Post by RZV500 » Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:31 pm

I have obtained two old style Yamaha key blanks (p/n 4BH-82511-09). I was informed that they were for an RD500, although when I compare them to my original 1984 RZV 47X, they are different. The original key is about 7mm shorter and the milled out slot is on the opposite side. Both replacement keys have 1247 stamped on the key with my original key stamped F38623. I know that the 1GE had a different ignition switch set up. Could the blanks be for a 1GE?

Hi,

The key blanks you have are latter type and i don`t think that they will fit into your original locks.
I have not seen a part number for the original key blank used on the 500 but someone on ebay Germany is selling a copy.
This is the original key sold with all 500`s.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, my original key is like the ones in the photo with the white inlay. None of my parts manuals list the key blanks and my usual parts supplier (Granby Motors) didn't have a part number for the original key blanks. I found the part number for my key blanks in a round about way and hoped they would fit! Never mind, I'll check out Ebay Germany.

Thanks, RZV500

i bought this key a while ago , on on ebay (not available anymore ) turned to have the right shape as for plastic handle , but the tip was too short (30mm instead of 36 mm for original ) (so did not fit )

as for genuine yamaha blank that fits i found two solution:
solution 1 :
yamaha 900890-55813 ( metal handle ) the tip is the right dimension (36 mm) (check that the groove on the tip of the original key is on the left when handle is on top . (there might be 2 kind of original key ) (left grooved and right grooved ) (this 900890-55813 is for left grooved )
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r317085899
plus
rubber cap for handle
https://www.cmsnl.com/products/capkey_5268257900/

advantages : genuine yamaha , very very (an surprinsigly) cheap about 3 E each ) , available , key is proper length and don't stick ou of key switch . there is yamaha marking on handle
disadvantage : shape of handle is different (rectangular , instead of lozange shape )

I think , the cheap price is because those parts are "yamaha marine"

solution 2 :
get 4BH-82511-09 (yamaha blank with lozange plastic handle ) (for left groove as well)
advantage : handle shape is lozange (but not quite right : wider on top than bottom , instead of wider on botton than top on original )
disadvantage : tip is longer than original (46 mm instead of 36 mm) so stick out of the key switch .

solution 3 :
buy a whole set of second hand locks + 2 corresponding original keys on yahoo auction ....
--> expensive and not so easy to find

solution 4 :
buy two identical second hand original keys on yahoo auction (if you can find them )
buy several second hand lock or/and a rekeying kit (available on ebay or ali express) and
rekey your locks : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmszrJxR0LM

as for the different locks (switch , helmet , tank ) difficulty of disasembling may vary )
but it is generally doable .

it also can be useful , if for some reason , you have different keys for the different locks on the bike , and you want to open all with the same key
(did that on another bike (Kawasaki KR250) ( not rzv500r )

As for myself , i choose solution 2 , which i find a good compromise .

just another info :
if your original key is with the groove on the right side :

the part number (metal key) is 90890-55814
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u268263826
(solution 1)

if you prefer the plastic handle key (but key tip is too long )
(solution 2)

I did not find a reference with the groove on the left (maybe there is , maybe not ...)

4BH-82511-09 for left groove
