Re: rd 500 cristian sarron replica
My RZV originally had a Gauloises connection.
The bike's history seems it was originally ordered by Yamaha France to use as a demo bike around 1984/5. It was sprayed in the Sarron Gauloises colors and used for 2 years by Yamaha France. It then somehow found it's way into storage here in the UK. There's about an 18 month history gap as to how and why it landed up being stored in the UK???
Around the same time, I was still living in South Africa, and was on the lookout for a 500 Gamma. I couldn't find a Gamma in SA or the UK, but my Uncle living here in the UK, and working in storage himself, came across the RZV bike still in storage in '87, it was in mint condition at the time so we bought it and arranged to have it shipped out to SA (through Linex Yamaha in SA, and to keep the paperwork at a minimum)
One thing that is strange about my bike is that it has no engine number??? I've never changed the casings, so it's a bit of an unknown???? Strange???? We can only think Yamaha France must have had the casings apart, or changed for some reason????
I'll post up a photo of a photo of when it was still in the Gauloises colors.
It seems that all the RD and RZ 500's in Gauloises colors originally came from Yamaha France, but not the Japan RZV.

Re: rd 500 cristian sarron replica
The Cristian Sarron replica bikes are next on my list to research when i have finished with the pre-production bikes. These were like the Marlboro bikes, unsold German stock repainted to help get rid of stock.
Getting the Marlboro bikes info only took me a few years, the Sarron bikes will be much harder.Yamaha France have no records before 1993,i know this because they have been helping me with info on my Sonauto pre-production development machine.
I will scan some magazine stuff i have in French and maybe someone can tell us if there are any cues in the articles?.

Here's how I received my bike all them years back... Gauloises RZV
Pity I wasn't intrested in a camera back in the day. I had a quick look around and only found these 2 pictures???
P.S. The Marlboro sticker is covering a small scratch

Well at least this solves the mystery for me about where Yamaha got the color scheme for the later Canadian RZ350.

Gouloises also sponsored the South African Grand Prix's at Phakisa for a few years and would give me weekend tickets for me and all my mates as long as I let them use my bike at their pro-mo tent.
And I made a small fortune selling all the cartons of smokes they'd give me
Ah, the good old days.
Here's my bike at one of their events. (the Peugoet car in the photo was one of their new demo cars, the old demo cars were Alfa GTV 3.0's all in Gauloises colours, they were beautiful, but they were called back after 3 of their reps killed themselves at high speeds
