Consider yourself lucky
stick it on the frame in the same place as the RZ
Those labels are for 17 digit VIN export bikes which have the designated export prefixes. Canada being JYA52X00 6 FA00xxxx. Y for Yamaha, H for Honda, S for Suzuki etc. You would never encounter one with a 9 digit VIN, and as such should be a big red flag to Custom Officials. An RZV500 would never have that label. They may actually seize such vehicle as it's fraudlent misrepresentation. In country shananagin's are one thing, Customs is an entirely different thing with serious legal ramifications. A friends Countach was seized upon entry from Italy in a similar situation, and there was a BIG fine levied for him to get it back many month's later.
Yep, They didnt come with them, They could seize it, I have never had one seized, I have been dealing with customs for roughly 30 years of importing cars and bikes, Here and Ireland, Most Customs officers dont really care about bikes and small ticket items.
This is how I import them, This is how I will keep importing them.....

Yes, but someone has to be first. How much are you willing to lose when taking that chance?

I have read stores about people in CA being pulled over by CHP and having their 2T bikes taken away. Those bikes were CA "legal". All it takes is one keen customs agent or one pissed of CHP officer and you are left with a big empty space that your bike used to occupy.

I have heard them stories as well John, Exactly, It doesn't matter how the bike got here, One customs officer or CHP officer will turn a blind eye on them, The next officers might not.
Either way, however you get them into Cali, 2-strokes are not legal to be registered on the street, 25 year law or not, All it takes is one grumpy CHP officer and you're toast.

I'm hoping that the knowledgeable CHP officers will retire soon. I know that back in the early 70's when they started imposing the smog laws. The muscle cars after 1964 were not able to register. At the same time folks that own the muscle cars went off to college and declare the cars non operational. A few years later government officials needed money because of Proposition 13. They saw that all of these cars were non operational and at the same time. The owners were out of college and main stream society. You guessed it the cars became legal. I'm hoping that as time goes by and California want more money. They will declare two strokes legal.

Now I heard this story back in the late 80's. Someone was bringing in an RZV500 from japan through the port in Washington. Customs told them that the bike was not allowed in the country and had a time frame to get it out. It was shipped to Vancouver. Then bike was transported to north of Michigan. Then the bike was ridden across the border by a Canadian tourist. Then the tourist walked back to Canada

An end to this thread more or less...
The bike made it through customs on the Japanese title that showed first registration in 85.
Had some trouble through the license branch trying to get a title initially, as I claimed the bike as a 1984 (which it is)...
But the title showed a year of 85....I basically had to make up all new paperwork to make all the dates 1985...
The bike was finally titled, but when the title came in the mail there was another issue.
There has apparently never been anyone who has legally titled a RZV in Indiana before, and RZV as a model was not in their data base.
The title only showed the model as ....500.... WTF....
So I went back today, and I think I have it straightened out now, as they have added RZV500R to their data base, and a title should be on its way again. Although it will show it to be a 1985, it will also show it to be a RZV500R and it has the correct mileage, and 9 digit serial number listed also.

Close enough I guess....
Now to get it back in one piece and on the road.

I wish ours were like that. Here it would be an abbreviated version like mine are, RZ5 and RZV but it is nice to have at least that correct for my RZV. Congrat's!

I previously told you, that's exactly what I did.

Had my manufacturer's letter in two days.

This shouldn't even be an issue.
Did you call a Yamaha dealer, Yamaha USA or Japan?

I have an RZV frame from Japan I want to title in Florida, it has a watermarked Japanese deregistration certificate I understand is the equivalent to Japanese title but it doesn’t show the year of manufacture only the first registration date. I read elsewhere in this forum that my VIN is the second production run that puts the frame as late 84/85 but that isn’t a definite so much as an either or, I’m thinking 85 is what I would say to more easily differentiate from the first production run. The dereg cert has a later date as first registration so not an accurate representation of manufacture year. Was purchased as used parts not a complete motorcycle, the engine case is 1GE and came from the UK, in fact every part I’ve sourced has come from all over the world including the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Bavaria, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, and South Africa. I think that’s the complete list, but the numbered items frame from Japan and crankcase from the UK. Invoice for both and dereg cert also with frame and invoice/receipts for every part. I’m told it could be done as a builders title with all the receipts or using the Japanese deregistration certificate (with printed translation from seller), but either way I’m also told I have to assemble and bring in for VIN inspection and to check for normal safety equipment head light, tail light etc. and that over 30 years is an antique registration in Florida with no emissions or noise requirements specifically. I wonder has anyone else done this and what’s the best way, a builders title from receipts or a foreign transfer of title?
