A swedish wreck out on the roades again....
Hello everybody !
Quite new member on this forum.
Did ride an RD500 back in the 80:s and now i´m back riding one once again.....Love it !
Was not a easy thing to get one and i ended up with a bike that had seen it´s best days long time ago. A restoration was needed.Wanted to get a bike that looked pretty much like a standard bike and I´m pretty satisfaid with the result even if I want to do some more upgrades.
This winter the engine gets a little more attention....would love to get aftermarket exhausts. Anyone has any laying around ??
To make a long story short....
I started with this.

Well....the bike stod still for about 14 years in a paintshop without cover.lgyee4 wrote:Looks great! What was all that red powder on the bike?
So I supose it was some sort of spraypaint dust. All the bike was covered in it. It was a pain in the xxx to get it of. A toothbrush and petrol mixed with twostrokeoil did the job. Tested some other stuff but then the dust became like deepredpaint and stucked.
Underneath the dust and dirt it wasn´t to bad.... but of course... I refreshed most parts anyway....

Hello Marsulpilamu !Marsupilami wrote:Well done!
What are the origins of the front end and rear rim?
Looking to do something similar with a wreck I bought last summer as well.
The front and wheels are from a YZF750R. I think it was an -95 modell I got it from.
What you have to do is make the rearwheelrim thinner, from 260mm to 240mm, to fit in the original swingarm.
On the frontend the original steam that goes in to the frame has to be moved over to the YZF-frontend. The YZF-steam is a little bit short to fit.
The frontend are quite a bit wider then the original so you have to move and reshape the cans for oil and collingfluids.
Seen your YZR build....i´m impresed by your work.
Btw...Don´t have any aftermarket pipes to sell ??

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking of a quick and cheap fix for the "rat bike" so I have something rideable this summer while I keep collecting parts for the "YZR".
Sorry, don't have an extra set of chambers to sell, I sold of a set of Nikons last summer, before I bought the second bike. Kind of regret this now, but they found a new good home so it''s ok.

If it´s cheap and easy swap I don´t know.... but it work really good.Marsupilami wrote:Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking of a quick and cheap fix for the "rat bike" so I have something rideable this summer while I keep collecting parts for the "YZR".

The handling of the bike becames much, much better.
Even if I have the standard suspension at the rear it sticks like glue to the ground with no surprises Use Michelin PP 2CT-tires in standard dimension from YZF750.
Took a testdrive on a standard bike during the season and I was surprised of the handling of it - "Stiff and nervous".
Sorry to hear that you have sold your "extra chambers".
Would be nice to upgrade my bike with a new set, but I can´t afford a brand new set of pipes.
The rebuild of the engine costs a bit to....

Thanks Aaron for the tip....never undertood why i couldn´t get the photos to show direct. Will try that next time.
Hmmm... wonder why an old photo from winter 09-10 got along with the two new ones ?
Marsulpilami: I´m not that fast....the old picture show how it looked during restauration/reparing. Had just when the picture was taken, got the YZF front and and wheels mounted.
Just then i wanted to see how it would turn out with the repared farings on.
Btw....how goes your YZR-build ?
