1984 RZV500R the dream is becoming reality

#1 Post by busa1300 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 9:18 pm

Not in my hands yet, but this bike will be shipping from Japan after the new year, and hopefully I'll have it in my garage by the end of Feb.....
Completely unrestored in anyway....only change is the calipers up front and the radial master.
This will probably be a long story, but here is where it starts for the bike.....

Thanks
It looks like it lived outside for a portion of it's life, so there are probably more hidden issues than I will want to know about...
But, I know that's how bikes from Japan are, and it's more or less expected.
I wanted one no one else has ever touched....or screwed up

Congrats, nice looking Spongebob bike. Shows how rare RZV mirrors are when RZV's are wearing RZ ones! Do you plan on returning to stock example or other plans for her?

Thanks
Naomi was the middle man on this bike. I found the bike and she bought it for me, I then paid her for bike and the cost to get it to me.
She just got it in her shop this week, and sent me some pics.
silverstrom just asked me the same question on mirrors....
I never noticed, although I knew there were differences between them.....
.....yea....that will probably be one of the many issues that I will eventually have to resolve on this bike.
I found a very nice set for $200....but there are other parts I'm sure I'll need to save up for, that will be more important first.

It will probably at some point get a major clean up like I did to my RGV VJ23 this past spring (down to the bare frame http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/atta ... 1500511394" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
...not sure if I will try and ride it first to get motivation to make it better.
Or just dig in this winter and not get a ride on it till it's ready to be used and occasionally abused this next summer.

Bottom line is it's a decent example, it's an RZV and it's yours! Price is likely more reasonable than paying around $20,000 like the last one in Florida. I thought you may be the guy around Montreal but then I saw you have a 25 year import rule so you're from the US? In Canada it's 15 years.

I have one finally...after many half attempts
I've been wanting a RZV since I read about them in Cycle mag back in 84....
But I had just bought a new FJ1100 two months earlier....
I went to Windsor in 86 to see my options of buying a RZ500 from Parker Yamaha....they would be happy to sell it to me....and even cross the border with it.
But I would have had to sell my FJ which I truly loved, and then own a bike which I could never title (or so I thought at the time.....I was 22 years old)
And the way I rode back then....I knew getting pulled over would be the end to the bike, probably forever.

I'm in Northern Indiana....Half way between Chicago and Detroit.....

Cost of the bike itself.....about $11,000
But, I know that is just the tip of the iceberg on this one.

A good price for sure. Seem's our RZ addiction began at the same time. I sold them at Toronto Motorbike and when the first ones off the boat came out from PDI, me and a buddy took them out for a rip. Had to have one. Glad you finally got one! Did you read the article In Motorcycle.com about Stampers Ride? It says it all!

I've been reading all I can about RZ/RD/RZV500's the past few months...is that the recent article about the guy doing track days with a RZV with R6 front/rear ends?

Since I knew I couldn't get an RZ500 easily....I bought the alternative in 85
And I still have it today after several face changes...My RZ350
http://www.customfighters.com/forums/sh ... ostcount=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After looking through a Japanese parts manual....I think the mirrors on the bike were probably 87/88 RZ350 part numbers....
Which are probably the same as Canadian/Australian RZ500's....?

I had the first year YPVS 350, 1983 when they hit the showroom. Some RZ350 mirrors are the same as the RZ500. Nice painting skills you have there, love the RS250

I prefer factory original paint if at all possible....but sometimes there is no choice but to repaint worn/cracked or beaten body work.
The Aprilia....well it was a track day bike so I felt it needed something a bit different

I'll ignore the red light, but the 180 speedo really sucks....
All my Japanese imports have them, although I do have a UK speedo sitting on the shelf for my VJ22 (150 mph) and a V model export speedo for the VJ23 (240 kph)
I'll leave the 180 on this bike, but is there any ignition cut off or gearing differences to keep the bike from going past the 180 mark...?
(I have my name in for a set of TSA pipes to solve the engine restriction)
I know the RGV's are restricted in various ways to keep speed down.

check out the rear sprocket. I believe the gearing is taller on the RZV to keep the noise down. maybe the CDI also

Pretty sure RZV restriction was in Main jets and needles, possibly emulsion tubes and the pipes have a sizeable restrictor in them. Changing to TSA will cure that and put the bike on a diet as well! Don't think they aren't electronically limited. Silverstrom can fill you in with regards to the best speedo for US in MPH, probably UK RD500 or Canadian MPH/KM if you decide to change it

Only restriction was with different jetting (main jet 145, 10 holes N-6 needle jet ), restrictors in exhausts and spark plugs a little hotter ( BR8HS vs BR9HS ).
All other mechanical and electrical components were identical.
Enjoy
