My TZR's

#1 Post by rubberfingers » Sat May 20, 2017 1:37 pm

Hi All

Thought you may like to see my pair of TZR 250's. The first is a 1990 blue 2ma which I have owned for 19 years. I have fully restored it over the last 6 months, all done myself except for the new handmade exhaust's and professional paint job.

The second is a Marlboro replica 1989 3ma I have recently got and in the process of checking over

Very nice Andy, had to sell my 2MA to help fund my 500, always a regret...

Thanks

The 2ma's are great bikes perfect for the road as they not too small for a 250 and you can easily use the power. The pipes I have make it sound like a gp bike, very zingy

Beautiful bikes. Your 2MA restoration looks flawless.

I'm particularly fond of the 2MA. I restored one in Faraway Blue for a friend a couple of years ago. Would love to have one along side my red/white 2ME.

Thank you it took a lot of work. I rebuilt the engine so am just running it in but every nut bolt and part was either new or fully refurbished. I love the faraway blue ones the most.

Here is another of my 3ma in different luca cadalora panels

I rebuilt my engine, but haven't ridden the bike since finishing the full nut and bolt restoration. How are you approaching the run-in phase?

What are your plans for the 3MA?

Hi I did 4-5 heat cycles with the bike stationery and then took it for an initial 5 mile run going up to 6k revs. I then it cool down and did another 5 mile run.

Since then I have been building up doing runs of 10-30 miles and slowly increasing the revs. I have now got 100 miles on it and and reving up to 8k with the odd burst a bit higher. Main thing I ensured was use the gears and ensure engine was not laboured. Going very nice so far, the pipes sound amazing.

No real plans for the 3ma yet other than fluid change and a thorough check over. There are a few brackets and fasteners I will refinish and replace. The bike has less than 5k miles on it so I am going to leave the engine as is for now other than a strip a clean of the carbs. Unfortunately the pilot jets heads are rounded though. Not sure how best to tackle them yet.

I had that problem with the blue 1KT I restored. It was impossible to remove the previously damaged pilot jets and attempts to drill them out didn't end well. I ended up replacing the carbs. If you do try to drill them out you need to use a drill press with the carb held in a press vice. If you have a machinist you trust that may work. The margin for error is very small.

Will you pressure/vacuum test the cases? I ask because my 2ME was low mileage, but when tested the crank seals leaked badly. Age and lack of use kills seals.

Thanks all, much appreciated.

The 3MA is a real pain to work on with the carbs at the front but I am learning a few short cuts along the way. To remove the carbs you have to remove the air box, and to remove the airbox you need to remove the radiator!

I airbox in now half to remove this issue in the future, not the best Yamaha design ever
