New Ride For Me!
New ride for me, very fun bike to ride, I'm amazed as to the way this 89 TDR250 turns on...
Have a few things to do to get it safe-tied, new tires (80% road 20% off road), chain and sprockets, tranny oil pump, clutch plates, steering stem bearings, brakes, etc, just your normal wear and tear items... Great winter time work...

Looks great - I like the rack on the back. When I restored mine, I actually did two side by side, one black/yellow , and the other turned from the 1990 blue/green/pink to the blue /yellow scheme. I sometimes kick myself for selling the black one.. First saw the new TDR in 1989 at a Yamaha dealer just North of Bracebridge. Cool bike then, even cooler now! Enjoy!

Wow...great bike Frank!
You mentioned your gearbox oil pump; I just did the pumps in my 2ME TZR. Same as yours, as is just about the entire engine other than carbs. Info and pics in my 2ME thread in the projects section. If I can help with anything just let me know. I also have some technical info you might find useful.
I'm jealous. Been looking for a nice one, but they are few and far between in Ontario. I was told about a dealer near here that bought one recently. Black and yellow like yours. Might have to stop by and get the full story.

Hi Frank, nice bike indeed. I have a couple, so can vouch for the fun-factor.
Silverstrom, I have a black/yellow one that I have restored and rebuilt. In UK though. £3000 and it's your I Can help with the crating up etc.

OH i hate you right now
I have a tdr but its the biggest peice of junk i have bought , 6000km and sitting outside by the sea wall in japan
got it running , but it must have leaky crank seals as i cant get it running right
they are a awesome bike , that one looks great
where else were they new ? as i see that has a steel swing arm and the jap ones have alloy

Sold in Canada, but for just one year I believe...1987, same year the TZR was sold here.

Nice score Frank, hope we see that one at a ride next year. Did you find it in Ontario or import it? I've only ever seen a couple on the road in 25 years. I bet if they put those in dealers today just like that they'd sell a ton of them.

I believe the TDR250 was only sold in Canada for 2yrs.
I'm thinking either late 1988 to 1990 and I was told only 300 of the bikes made it to Canada.
Not sure if that was for each yr or the entire run.
I think that Europe had a much longer run of these bikes, perhaps 5yrs? There's still lots of parts all over e-bay Europe, just have to watch that dam shipping... Plus lots of little stuff can still be ordered from Yamaha Canada. Actually I managed to get the original grips from Yamaha Canada...
I pick up the bike down near Hamilton from a guy that works for Yamaha Canada.
Yes Ruzty, I'll bring it out for a group ride next yr if my work permits... Crazy hours last couple of yrs...
Thanks Martman, still debating if I should paint the NOS tail fairing I bought from you or to order in one of the carbon fiber looking ones???
By chance do you have a descent spare set of handles that mount to the rear fairing?
Thanks John. you are a wealth of knowledge on all these bikes we have and you've sent me lots of info already on this model... Plus you know the TZR engine very well.
One thing I've found is you have to be extremely careful with the body panels, they get very brittle with age.
I haven't broken anything, but the rear tail fairing has a piece missing out of it as well as the left gas tank panel at the bottom of the rad. I can live with that one the way it is, but the rear tail fairing has to be repaired or replaced.
Steve, I've been noticing that the stock expansion cambers seem to be different for the Euro models compared to the Canadian, is that correct?
I'd love to pipe this bike, not sure how I can slip that past the wife...

Frank, sorry no spares to speak of except a repop seat cover, and two tail light/lic plate bracket assemblies; I went with a euro spec tail lens as a sleeker design. Out of interest, I just saw on evil bay an OE engine guard set, something I hadn't seen before. The new black/yellow TDR I saw was in 1989 at a dealer. My current one is a 90 - that was the red/green/blue colour scheme, an original Canadian bike, which jives with the 89 and 90 model years sold here. I bought my two in 2009 and at that time there were about 6 or 7 that appeared on Kijiji over the spring/summer. I tried selling mine for a brief period shortly after I sold the blk/yellow one, asking 4 k fully restored and not much interest. I had way over that in parts..As for exhausts, I'm pretty certain only the silencer outlets differ from UK to Canada. I'd love to throw some Lomas pipes on mine - I only got as far as his silencers, just too many other projects needing cash. Maybe for the 500.

hi guys i have an 88 model black and yellow, for me the biggest transformation on the bike was to fit a set of "Martins" pipes. these are underslungs so you lose the classic TDR look..... but the handling....when you remove about 7kgs from the top of the bike and replace with 1.5kgs under it ...very very hoonable

I bought one 4 years ago, in a bad shape - so I decided rather than hunting for original parts to do a project bike. I was inspired by a race class in UK where the race TZR250 etc, and I saw one TDR competing there, it was featured in CMM (Classic Motorcycle Mechanics).
This is what it looks like:
It is clearly the bike I choose most often from my stable of 15 bikes for a short ride; it is so much fun. My design is polarizing people, some like it some hate it, but thats it. I wanted to have this race rep look.

Hi Mikkell, yeah that sure is a bike difference in exhaust weight and yes lowering the center of gravity would really help make the TDR more fun.
Wolfgangh you did an amazing job on your TDR, looks great. Love the TZR wheels, brake upgrades, tail section solo seat and exhaust, it sure looks like it's a blast to ride. Thanks guy's for the info and pic's.
