new guy here too!! 1985 RZ500RN

#1 Post by bolly » Fri Sep 30, 2011 7:15 pm

new guy from Canada, just bought last week a 1985 RZ500 with a 52x serial!

Semi-daily rider is a rebuilt engine/trany 1970 H1 (only 800miles on her!!) with open stingers!!! :smt029

But what brings me here (and a few other yam/RD forums) is this RZ500!!

I'm 2nd owner, PO dropped it left side and cracked the front fairing, dented the left pipe, rashed the left side long fairing and who knows what but now I have her!! Last registered 2002, BTW 18,000 miles.

Started on one kick, found out the clutch plates were stuck(I think as she stalled, shifted to N and rolled fine so on the trailer she went!

Just want everyone to know I don't know SFA about an RZ!!

Gonna charge a battery tonight and if there's no rain attempt the clutch cover so I can free up that clutch.... anyways here she is!

Hey, welcome to the board. That triple sounds nasty. I'm about 10 minutes south of you, used to start my rides with the Range Road until they closed the Lisle gate. There's a few of us on the 350 board maybe going for a ride to Creemore in a week or two.

Welcome bolly. Nice find... These bikes are a lot of fun, completely different then the H1 you have... They are not prone to tank slappers, well maybe if you take your hands of the bars... Hope to see you at some of the Ontario group rides...

Hi bolly, might just be the clutch plates are stuck from sitting. if not that, you will want to look on the left side of the engine first. where the clutch cable goes into the engine there is the cover for the front sprocket. There is a rubber cap that has your clutch cable adjuster in there. On the inside of this cover is the clutch release mechanism that pushes the clutch release shaft.. Might need to free that up and then adjust. Also, if you take that cover off you will need to put some gasket sealer on the threads of the centre mounting screw otherwise you'll end up with a oil leak.
Hope that helps.
I don't think anyone would mind, we all love 2 strokes and the H1 is a true classic. It really got the 2 stroke street bike world going...

Bought this tank just 10 minutes ago, mine has that nasty crunch from the left clipon!! http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110751489673?ssP ... 1439.l2649 ... he's only an hour from me!! and has a few more parts I may be interested in!! :)

... read the owners manual and did some research here about leakdown and compression testing and hoping my tranny oil hasn't been sucked dry from a leak in the cases!!!

Going to remove the fairings today, drain some oils and check some fluid levels... try to sort the clutch plates as well...

Here's a couple questions;

1. IF bores and pistons are good, can anyone tell me about top-end seal/gasket kits? Price? sources?

2. What about crank seals?

The battery I bought a last week won't fit unless I jam it in there, even then I'm not sure... top right pipe's gotta come off :( BUT, she fired up on 2 kicks and smoked out my neighbours! LOL!

For gaskets and seals, I've just been going to my local Yamaha dealer. No problems getting these parts, normally get them the following week.
Check with the guy you picked up the fuel tank from, he sometimes has all the gaskets and seals...
How many KM does your bike have???
Normal to smoke everyone out with these bikes, their fine the rest of the day or once warmed up...

thanks Frank!

have 30,000-ish km's on her.... just concerned about the tranny oil (lack thereof) will know more later today...

I just did my first motorbike motor/tranny rebuild last winter (on my H1) new first over pistons/bearings/rods/seals/gaskets/crank trued & inner lab seals... about $1250bux total... spendy job for 3 holes!
